At 5 30 this morning Mrs Nation and five followers wrecked the Senate saloon in Topeka. Nation was slightly injured and is in police custody. One shot was fired by a porter but no one was hit. Major General Miles nominated lieutenant general by the president in New York.
A blaze at the Exposition hotel in Binghampton New York early today killed two horsemen named Tom Cook and Sid Holland. Several others were fatally injured from jumping to escape the flames.
Washington officials report the president designated Major General Nelson A Miles as Lieutenant General in a February nomination. The move places Miles in a senior army leadership role amid ongoing defense discussions.
Rev. John Keller secretary to Bishop Starkey was seriously wounded by Thomas Barker who waited outside the Sands home after a dispute over Barker's wife. Keller, 38, from Philadelphia, lost sight in one eye and injured fingers. Barker surrendered to police.
Richmond Indiana February 5 Captain John K Gowdy of Indiana will be reappointed consul general to Paris by President McKinley for four years more.
Republican leaders in Des Moines consider a joint conference to ask Minister Conger, now in Peking, to accept the gubernatorial nomination. The idea arises after the Titus amendment failed and with the campaign ahead by a year.
Mrs Nation led six women armed with hatchets in a failed raid on the Unique restaurant in Topeka Kansas. Police arrested Nation after a street brawl that left many injuries but spared her. Crowds followed as the attempted wrecking ended with the restaurant intact and Nation in jail.
Topeka reports a plot to tar and feather Carrie Nation, the joint-smasher, as she leads a temperance crusade. Nation says she can handle a shotgun but won’t lead others to death. A Topeka recruiting office lists about 300 volunteer soldiers, mostly women, planning to march and hold prayer meetings in front of joints.
Mrs Nation faced a police court this morning after a disturbance at the station where she urged the arrest of drunken offenders and declared plans to “smash all the joints” of the city. She prayed, addressed crowds, and promised to remain until her work in Topeka prospered, with supporters and opponents watching developments.
Chicago marked the memory of John Marshall with a day of closing courts and school ceremonies. Senator Lodge of Massachusetts delivered the main oration at the Auditorium to an audience that included bench and bar. A banquet followed, and celebrations occurred nationwide from coast to coast.

Mexican troops routed a large force of Maya Indians and inflicted heavy losses. Separately promoters of a Chicago bazaar for an aged Jews home announced that $11,000 had been cleared for the project.
Washington reports Secretary Root answered a senate demand for Mabini's fate. Mabini, captured by U S forces on the last day of December, is confined on Guam as a prisoner of war for aiding insurgents. Telegrams show a rigid war law policy and threats of trials for native intimidators and felons.
Reports from Manila say Mindoro natives killed the insurgent governor a week ago and no troops are present there. In Bataan a rally urged insurgents to cease operations within a week or risk American capture, while southern Luzon sees ongoing surrenders and minor skirmishes. Public debate on the provincial government bill moves toward passage, with commissioners Wright and Ide drafting codes and planning a southern tour to organize self government.
In Burlington Iowa on February 5, Misses Grimes daughters of the late Governor Grimes faced a masked burglar who demanded money on threat of death. They repelled him with pistols and a shotgun, likely wounding him. Separate dispatch from Frankfort Kentucky reports Captain Garnett Ripley jailed on Goebel assassination conspiracy charges, with Col. Breckenridge set to defend.
