Norwegian novelist and Nobel Prize winner Sigrid Undset will address Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls on February 23 in a lecture titled Scandinavia and the War. The talk is part of discussions about peace and the United States role in world affairs.
Sheryl Ely two year old daughter of Mr and Mrs Hubert Ely Guthrie Center Iowa was at Iowa Methodist hospital with an open safety pin lodged in her stomach. The pin caused no pain and doctors were uncertain if an operation would be needed.
Craven Shuie of Cedar Rapids and George S. Wright of Council Bluffs are nominated for the university presidency. Alumni association executive secretary Bruce E. Mahan announced. Also nominated are H. J. Garretson of Los Angeles and Paul Smith of Dubuque for regional and district director posts.
Du Pont announces staff from Old Hickory Tennessee Richmond Virginia and Buffalo New York arriving to join the supervisory team at the Clinton cellophane plant. Construction is nearly finished and wiring and machinery installation are progressing with operations expected to start early in March.
A railway locomotive boiler exploded in Denver on February 4 injuring 27 people. The engine blew to pieces and scattered over hundreds of feet, with many injured occupants of parked automobiles at a grade crossing. The blast occurred as the engine reached the crossing.
Des Moines February 4 The House approved a bill by 95 to 4 to let farmers count federal commodity corporation loans on sealed corn as current income for tax purposes.
Nine new vehicles were registered in Washington county during the past week. Five licenses dated January cover the January total of 54 car and truck registrations, with the remaining four licenses in February. Owners include Lucy Dempsey, C. L. Kilgore, George A. Howard, F K McClelland, Lewis E. Dempsey, C R McCutchen, Erlis J Swartzendruber, J F Kauffman & Co, and Francis Romine, with Ford and Plymouth Buick and Willys models among them.
City council receives a $100 charge for firemen service at January fires and opens an application for a Dougall beer permit. A water softener test at City Hall is tabled for action later as the meeting remains brief.
Last night the Washington city council held a brief session mainly for routine business. A beer permit renewal for Dougall Bros. was referred to the appropriate committee for next meeting action. The January fire department bill totaled 100 dollars, with the south square blaze on January 23 accounting for most costs. The city tests a water softener at City Hall as a potential rental program. No action on police staffing. Mayor Lytle indicates George Baker remains police head until April. Mrs Mildred Rudiger and Dunham Morrison named to the library board.

Havana February 4 Col Fulgencio Batista quashed a military threat to civilian rule by arresting army and navy heads and dismissing the police chief. He restructured the armed forces, closed constitutional liberties for ten days, and surrounded public buildings with guards to secure control.
Des Moines Feb 4 legislative members demand the resignation or dismissal of George A Brown as executive secretary of the Iowa High School Athletic Association amid charges he manipulated an election in the northeast district. Protests come from school officials and newspapers. some urge abolishing the association to end Brown's rule.

Charles Erwin Kelly died at his parents home this morning around 10 30 from a heart ailment related illness. He would have turned 18 on March 4 and was born in Washington. He leaves parents Carl and Gertrude Chilcote Kelly and nine siblings. His body was taken to L A Jones funeral home and arrangements were not yet completed.
The senate voted 47 to 0 to raise annual old age pension appropriations from seven million to eight million dollars for the coming biennium, as reported from Des Moines dated February 4.

A bill to create an Iowa industrial and defense commission and an interim national defense cooperation committee was introduced in both chambers. The commission, up to 15 members named by the governor, will replace the current defense group and include agriculture labor and business reps. An interim committee of four members plus legislative leaders would assist, with a $50 000 appropriation for the next biennium.
A car driven by a son and a truck driven by Wolfe collided at the Te corner of the square about 7 36 this morning. The truck sustained minor damage while the car had a dented radiator and front end parts. No one was injured.
