Senators from livestock and tannery states forecast a compromise on the tariff bill with a four cent per pound duty on raw hides and eight cents on dried hides. Talks aim to protect leathers and provide compensation for hides while no final decision on leather and shoe duties yet.
Babe Ruth again refused to sign the three year contract offer from the New York Yankees for 85 000 a year stating he will be a holdout unless demands are met. He said he would quit baseball and live on investment dividends if not granted.
Iowa State College wraps up the twenty ninth annual farm and home week with 2642 attendees. Of these 1194 men and 728 women represent 96 Iowa counties, surpassing the prior record by 400. Visitors from thirteen other states and two foreign countries also attended.

Chicago reports its fifth homicide in a wave of gang violence. William Healy, 37, a beer runner, was shot early today after a possible clash with rival beer racketeers. Mrs. John Warnock aged near 87 died at five this morning at 702 East Jefferson after a week of illness following a stroke last Tuesday. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 2 PM at Sherman funeral home with Rev. D. Chalmers Fulton of United Presbyterian Church officiating. Burial is in Elm Grove cemetery. Mrs. Warnock born Margaret Saral Love on March 22 1843 in Slippery Rock PA, came to Ainsworth as a girl, married John Warnock in 1868, lived in Washington and Tracy Minnesota before returning to Ainsworth then to Washington 35 years ago. She is survived by one daughter Mrs W F E Paul of Ainsworth, granddaughter Mrs W A Matson of Aurora IL, sister Mrs E J Pattison of New Castle PA, and brother C C Love of Spearfish SD. The sister is 92 and the brother 82.
A group of ten De Molay boys visited Wellman Monday evening to install new officers for six months. Wellman provided the Masome rooms and hosted a parade and dance after the meeting. Chaperones included L. B. Lupton W. T. Carson Howard Mc Bride and Carlton Haven.
The Wisconsin Supreme Court ruled Gov. Walter J. Kohler must face ouster action over alleged excessive campaign expenditures. The decision reverses a circuit court ruling and sends the case to the lowest court for trial. The action stems from claims Kohler spent more than $100,000 of his money in the primary campaign.
