President Harding addresses the semiannual meeting of a government business group praising six months of expenditure cuts amid inflationary pressures. He cites the budgetary system curbing government costs from about 4.55 billion to 8.974 billion dollars and urges broader austerity and efficiency.
Brig. Gen. Charles G. Dawes, director of the budget, presided at the meeting and presented a report showing more than 1 billion dollars in savings for the government in six months of the new bureau's operation. The President noted the gathering followed a policy of convening business heads of government as in any firm.
Secretary Hoover told the Interstate Commerce Commission that investing one billion dollars in American railways would yield more jobs and industry progress for U S. farmers and investors than two billion abroad, and that plans must be based on the return of Americans to normal economic activity.

Devorah Iowa February Matt Dotson village marshal shot and killed his brother Al Dotson at a dance hosted by the Devorah fire department. The fatal shooting occurred as the marshal was escorting an intoxicated man Jack Morris from the event when Al Dotson intervened.
Washington plans rest with a final plenary session to sign five treaties in a grand finale. The Far East committee resolved the 21 demands to Japan’s satisfaction and completed three pacts, including a supplemental Pacific treaty excluding Japan from the guarantee clause. All nine powers sign the China related agreements at the conference.
A wire message from the Italian cardinal Breaidente Wilson bearing the American cardinal caused a balloting delay as Marit is delayed and will reach Naples today or Sunday. The conclave cardinals remain secluded with no outside contact, the ceremonies of balloting wearing violet cloaks and hoods will continue and cloaks cannot be removed until a pope is chosen.
Chaos grips New Jersey officials after the Court of Errors and Appeals declares the Van Ness act illegal. Only federal courts may handle prohibition cases while state offices struggle with fees already collected under the act. Federal dockets overflow with Volstead violations and related matters.
Gates Pa February 4 six more bodies were recovered bringing the death toll at the Hi Cc Frick Coke Gates mine to 22. Officials fear higher toll as three or four men still unaccounted for after a deadly explosion in a section of the plant. About thirty men were in the area when the blast occurred and are now accounted for except for a few. Recovery work continues at Masontown mortuary and on the mine site. The cause of the explosion remains undetermined.
San Francisco February four Fatty Arbuckle escapes conviction as second trial ends with a 10 to 2 deadlock after a 44 hour deliberation. Judge Louderback discharged the jury and plans a possible third trial. Foreman J J McElroy reports no verdict. Defenders say the prosecution acted impartially. Jurors Brownbever and Dolson stood for acquittal.
Nat E. Friedman disclosed jury notes after fourteen ballots. Initial vote stood nine for conviction and eight for acquittal. Mitchell shifted from acquittal to conviction on ballot ten, while the last four ballots remained 10 to 2.

The Fortnightly club current events department will meet Tuesday afternoon with Mrs. Wilson to discuss places of interest and current events.
A reception is set for Wednesday evening at 7 30 in the Christian church to honor new members with a splendid program. All new members are urged to attend, and existing members should come to welcome them. The D A R will meet at Mrs C A Boices home on Tuesday February 7 at 2 30. Plans for Washingtons birthday celebration will be completed and full attendance is desired. Please note the change in meeting place 3022.

Judge Edwards today set the date of trial for case 10 and issued a pork venire. The update indicates the case will proceed in court next month with jurors selected for voir dire.
Judge Edwards fixed March 6 for Governor Oral’s trial on charges of conspiring to embezzle eight hundred thousand dollars of state funds. A venire was issued on motion of the state amid the case’s political fallout at Waukegan.

Nine convicts were killed in a gas blast at the Beele Ellen coal mines in Bibb County Alabama. State mine inspector C H Nesbitt reported the explosion was local and bodies had been recovered. The mines are owned by the Bessemer Coal, Train and Land company led by president Henry L Radham. Approximately two hundred convicts are employed.
