Remodeling Rectory at St. James in Washington
Parish members of St. James in Washington undertake a major remodeling of the church rectory. Ground floor will gain dining room kitchen utility room housekeepers quarters reception and a community room while the second floor will house study suites bedrooms and two Rutlest roots. Volunteers on site daily include 10 to 15 men with women handling meals and floor sealing. Six parish circles of women rotate duties for floor sealing and weekly shifts. Harry Sowden designed the master plan and Tony Lake serves as superintendent.

Plan County Red Cross Drive Outlines for Washington County
The regular quarterly Washington County Red Cross meeting at Baldrige home set plans for the coming fund drive. Walter Farrell will chair the annual drive with Forrest Walker as publicity chairman. Rural drive starts later this month with town campaigns beginning March 1.

Washington county records report the county’s first highway fatality of the new year. Karl Nichols 30 of Muscatine died in a high speed crash at the Milwaukee railroad underpass west of town. SCS Officials Await GOP Plans for Changes

Elmer Horning 63 Dies This Morning at Washington Farm
Elmer Horning aged 63 died of a heart attack at his farm eight miles northwest of Washington at 4? o'clock this morning. Funeral services are set for 2 o'clock Thursday at Jones Funeral Home with Dr William J Grossheim in charge. Burial will be in Elm Grove cemetery. Horning born May 8 1889 in Washington County was married to Emma Hines in 1914 who died in 1943. On Feb 8 1947 he wed Mary Beer who survives. Survivors include son Walter of Washington an adopted son William at home two stepdaughters Leona Blum Wellman and Dorothea Hardin Rock Island IL one sister Mrs Elmer Vincent Kent six grandchildren and a deceased daughter Hazel.
