Priests across India gather for mass prayer amid a rare planetary alignment in Capricorn's 10th house. Astrologers warn of possible wars and disasters. 250 priests in New Delhi undertake a 21 day prayathon with offerings while a holy man remains chained in the Jumna River until Feb. 10.
Iowa Attorney General Evan Hultman proposed requiring aid to dependent children recipients and applicants to provide detailed information on deserting parents. The plan, urged at a county attorneys workshop, includes a central registry idea and a cross agency location bureau to collect records, plus a stronger fraud program to protect federal funds.
In Eagle Grove a six year old kindergarten pupil, Daryle Ryan, died after slipping on a snowbank and tumbling under a school bus as it rounded a corner to pick up his class. The right rear wheel passed over his head.

Grinnell, Iowa. A blaze at Howard May dairy farm destroyed 33 purebred Holstein cows, about 150 hogs, 5000 bales of hay, 2000 bales of straw and a combined cattle, hog and milking shed. May and his son Dale and a hired man were milking when flames broke through the ceiling. Cause unknown. damage estimate not yet available.

Lydia Mae Thomas eight told police how she and her father Larry survived a second floor escape as fire swept through their Rose Bud home killing Lydia's mother and four siblings Sue Ann seven Karen Marie five Larry Lee one Tomothy James one month. Larry Thomas, a strip miner, tried to rescue but firemen restrained him until authorities investigate the blaze.
