Internal revenue agents rejected a Knoxville case where a taxpayer tried to list his wife’s false teeth as depreciating property noting she eats enough. The joke hinged on the claim to avoid tax.
At the Berlin foreign ministers session, Secretary of State John Foster Dulles labeled Molotovs German peace plan unacceptable. He urged a German election to form a government that truly represents all Germans and supports a lasting peace, while dismissing Molotovs charges as unfounded chatter.
Senator Guy M. Gillette quoted an unidentified New York broker calling current coffee prices ridiculous and fictitious. He said a July letter warned $1 per pound or higher levels, as lawmakers weighed his bill to regulate the New York coffee and sugar exchange. Gillette canceled his own testimony, leaving Gustavo Lobo Jr. as the primary witness.
The Supreme Court heard two hours of arguments over FCC rules aiming to outlaw as a lottery any program based mainly on chance. FCC attorneys and networks debated if giveaways lure audiences or censor broadcasts. J Roger Wollenberg described giveaways as mass appeal stunts while Paul Williams claimed the FCC is rewriting laws Congress refused to rewrite.
Leslie P illman a 45 year old Fairfield auto dealer was taken to Federal Prison at Terre Haute Indiana to begin serving an 18 month term for income tax evasion.
Yuri Rostavorov a Soviet second secretary who surrendered in Japan seeks asylum in the United States and provides voluntary disclosures about a large Far East spy ring. He left his wife and family behind citing fear and planned to return to the Soviet Union shortly after surrender. Officials previously denied knowledge of the case but acknowledged Rostavorov is in U S hands and kept in safekeeping in the far east with information shared only among top diplomatic and military leaders.
Polk county grand jury will study the escape of two convicts who fled in a taxi on a three hour liquor spree. Capt. Louis Volz of the vice squad plans to question taxi driver C. D Edwards about the route and the four Des Moines liquor joints visited. Prisoner William Rimmer of Cedar Rapids aided by knife forced Edwards into the ride.
A westbound semi collided with a 12 feet 5 inch clearance railroad bridge three-fourths mile west of Washington on highway 92, tipping onto its side and damaging the Crooked Creek bridge. Driver George Kentopp escaped uninjured. Byron Orville Brown of Denver sustained leg and hand cuts and was hospitalized. Total damage about 15 000 dollars to the trailer and 7 000 to 8 000 dollars to the tractor plus 200 dollars to the bridge.
Council minutes reveal T. B. Bailey pulled the bid to rezone 314 East Washington from residential to business after nearby owners urged retention of the current boundary. The meeting also heard sewer odor complaints in East Jefferson and East Madison, with Mayor Brown seeking fire department clarity on duties.
Des Moines Gov. William S. Beardsley announces he will not seek a fourth term and fuels talk he may run for U.S. Senate. Atty. Gen. Leo Hoegh contemplates GOP nomination for governor. Other Republicans in the mix include Chambers Nicholas Lyne Palmer and Herring. Democrat Clyde L. Herring seeks the nomination.
Reverend Alfred Trenerry 81, long time Baptist minister in Washington and Bonaparte, died Sunday in Omaha. Funeral Wednesday at 2 30 p m at Bonaparte Baptist Church with Rev Beltz and Rev Earl Longfellow officiating. Interment in Bonaparte cemetery beside his wife. Born in England, he trained at Central College Pella and Grand Island College Neb.
The Iowa unemployment study committee reported the overall employment picture is good with no cause for concern after its first meeting. Chairman C. Allen Whitfield said conditions are better than in 1949 before the Korean conflict, while noting pockets of local unemployment. J. Claire Blodgett of the Iowa Employment Security Commission outlined figures and said emergency defense contract rules for special unemployment areas need modification.
Paul Kurtz 57 of Chicago died there Friday. Services were held in Chicago Monday. He was a son of John Franklin and Dora Kurtz who once ran the Dankwardt and Kurtz meat market in Washington. Survivors include his ill mother at the Dyron Kurtz home in Burlington two brothers Boice of Moline and Dyron of Burlington and a sister Mrs Wilma Bieklen of Texas.
Punxsutawney Phil appeared atop Gobblers Knob at 7 63 a.m. CST and cast an 8 foot 2 inch shadow signaling six more weeks of winter. Club members note his fur has turned nearly white since last seen and security guarded the event amid reports of enemy plots.
Members of the American Legion auxiliary from Washington organized a Monday night visit to the Veterans hospital in Iowa City. The event featured Melvin Hill and his Dutch band plus a bottle band with Janet McFadden on baton Jody Timmins as vocal soloist and Pat Burroughs on mouth harp beside Mrs. T. R. Phillips at the piano. Patients joined in group singing as cookies and punch were served. A large delegation traveled to the visit including Melvin Hill Jody Timmins Jack Salladay Enid McConnell Ruth Ann Brown Gus Mast and many others.
Los Angeles attorney says James Roosevelt may seek divorce rather than separation after Mrs Roosevelt disclosed a 1945 letter listing nine women he allegedly knew. Roosevelt calls the infidelities imaginary, claiming the letter was used for blackmail and a separate maintenance suit may be amended to include divorce.
Ed ward Godfrey a 17 year old conf essed triple slayer is declared sane by a psychiatrist He will be arraigned on three counts of first degree murder next week The delay to finalize the mental state report follows the November 15 shootings at the Floodwood home where he killed his foster parents and a foster brother.
A 14 year old boy confessed to four fires and prowling at least six homes in Des Moines. Lt Arvene Nelson said the youth admitted trying to burn an unoccupied house, starting two grass fires, and kicking over a street flare to see it burn. He also broke into a home and saturated a chair with oil before neighbors stopped the blaze.
The Des Moines Weather Bureau reports milder temperatures with highs in the 40s and 50s under partly sunny skies. Tonight will dip to the mid 20s to mid 50s, then reach 40s to 50s again Wednesday. Light showers may hit northwestern towns Wednesday, with Thursday partly cloudy and cooler.
New York reports the 10th annual National Antiques Show will open at Madison Square Garden next month. A highlight is the nearly extinct five cent cup of coffee on display among other items.
Claude T. McCoy and Howard Benn announce Republican bids for the county board of supervisors. Benn currently serves on the board and was named chairman. McCoy is a Crawford township native and former city assessor with Farm Bureau and American Legion ties. Benn represents Marion township with three children on a Marion farm.
Mrs. Sarah Mills of Mt. Pleasant died this morning. She was mother to Mrs. Pryor Fenn Gilbert and Albert Mills of Washington. Funeral services will be held at Casper funeral home in Salem with burial in Cedar cemetery.
The YWCA will sponsor three matinee only films at the State Theater February 15 March and April 12. Cyrano D Bergerac Oliver Twist and The River are new to Washing ton. Season tickets cost 165 for adults with 65 cent single admissions. High school tickets are 14 for season and 55 cents for single. Under 12 not eligible for season. Tickets sold by YWCA Council Y wives Y Mixers and Senior Y Teens or at Washington Skelgas store via Louise Wasson.
Dick Haymes and Rita Hayworth barricaded in a 12th floor hotel suite in Manhattan as two deputies with a civil arrest warrant waited outside. The warrant, issued by Justice James McNally, stems from Joanne Dru’s complaint alleging $33,323 in unpaid alimony from their 1949 divorce.
