Senator Caraway of Arkansas told the Senate that about a thousand people die daily of starvation in the United States. He attacked Republican leaders for tolerating and ignoring the misery among unemployed and idle workers.
In Oskaloosa on February 2 crowds of about 100 farmers gathered outside a court hearing for six men accused of attacking Rose White, a 50 year old resident who had recently recovered enough to leave the hospital. The hearing began amid tense, secret proceedings as the men faced access limits and aroused crowds roamed the town while the sheriff’s office watched closely.
A party of five engineers arrives in Washington to establish a three month headquarters for surveying the natural gas pipeline from Texas to Chicago. They rent Wells apartment on East Jefferson and plan to move to Knoxville later as construction stages begin. Most rights of way in the county have been secured or contracted, with further agreements expected shortly.
Earl Ameton involved in the Long-Ag collision last month is reported much improved. He was the driver of the other car and sustained severe injuries requiring a brief hospital stay. He now shows progress and is compelled to return to recovery.
Owa City teams visit Wednesday for two games at the Washington YMCA. American Legion in Iowa City fields both volleyball and basketball squads opposing local V teams. Admission for both games is one price. Volleyball at 7:15 p m basketball at 8:15 p m tonight at the YMCA gym.
N N D Feb 2 The toll from tainted home preserved food at a farm party rose to 11 with the death of Genevieve Hein 16 at Grafton hospital. Dr G W Glaspel said she suffered paralyzed throat and intense agony before dying, while Joseph Leach 26 remained near death as the lone survivor of the Thursday night gathering hosted by Mr and Mrs Edward.
The Fred Donaldson residence six miles northeast of Washington burned to the ground this afternoon. Neighbors helped save parts of the structure though most furniture was lost. The blaze started from a pile of rubbish near 621 West Monroe Street around noon and was extinguished by 1 PM. The home suffered only minor age-related damage and the owner was not home at the time.
The trial of H F Griffin against Ernest J Salladay begins in district court with a jury drawn. The note is admitted as evidence and Griffin, the plaintiff, rests after his only witness. Jurors and attendees given until Thursday nine o clock. Judy plans to travel to Sigourney after proceedings.

The Washington Y M C A marks its seventh year with strong finances and no debt. About 450 men and boys are members as decorating plans move forward for the unpainted walls of the building. New members were welcomed at local churches after revival efforts, and youth activities continued with meetings and appeals for wider participation.
Washington reports the Navy announces Major General Smedley Butler faces court martial in Philadelphia on February 16 over a derisive remark about Benito Mussolini. Presidents Hoover and Adams were to discuss clemency options, with possible outcomes ranging from reprimand to continued proceedings. Officials expected formal charges to await the Adams Hoover meeting.
Two Louisa county officials and New Boston citizens met Cedar Rapids engineers to discuss building a highway bridge over the Mississippi at New Boston. The ferry would be replaced, shortening the Chicag o route by about 69 miles. About forty applicants seek county aid for the project under the county plan.
Weather note reports the ground hog saw its shadow, signaling six more weeks of winter. It cites a mild January with days near 25 degrees, January 21 coldest, and February starting mild with temperatures from 22 to 40 degrees and light precipitation through January.
The basement at the H I Ward store has undergone major changes. Lin clean laid on the floor, the front remodeled to accommodate display and sale, shelves installed, and stock rearranged to ease shopping. Harry C Ward, manager, said the floor will be an attraction and greatly improve appearance and shopping ease.
Opponents led by Howard Simmer and Wallace Short condemn the Iowa State Highway Commission and the 100 million road bond proposal. The debate lasts three hours before a lunch recess, accusing the commission of punishing counties voting against the program.
Marshall Bidwell, head of the organ department at Coe College and city organist for Cedar, will give an organ recital at the Methodist church tomorrow at 8 o'clock. He has performed in Chicago, St. Louis, Boston, Omaha, Ann Arbor, Detroit, and Stanford University, earning praise for his clear interpretation. The Springfield Union lauded his artistry, noting his unassuming manner, fine finger and pedal technique, and rapid color variety. Admission is free, and Bidwell will include a memory-based program highlight.
A telegram to A. Jones from Mrs J Monroe of Glenellen Illinois states that Emma McChesney died there today. She was the daughter of the late St G McChesney and a former Washe resident.
San Francisco social scene reports a woman reader will lead an expedition for the National Society for the Exploration of the Northeast Greenland coast this summer. She will head the Arctic voyage, seeking new discoveries and setting a bold precedent for women in exploration.
