Cozad Nebraska residents won the pork contest against Audubon Iowa in a campaign to promote pork and will host a dinner for 75 people. The dinner will feature a beef menu as residents grew tired of pork during the campaign.
The Senate Agriculture Committee, in closed session, reviews a tentative omnibus farm bill proposing a soil bank, 90 percent parity price supports, and a two price rice system. Voting on provisions starts Saturday at 10 am amid debates over timing and reach.
Iowa’s 1956 quota for United States savings bonds was set at 167,100,000 dollars, up about five million from 1955. The national quota rose, but Iowa’s state allotment is seven and a half million below 1955 sales which reached a 10 year KE and H bond record. L A Holland, Washington County volunteer, notes the county quota at 1,437,226 dollars, down from 1,500,614 dollars in 1955.
Tomorrow is the deadline for submitting nominations for the outstanding young farmer of Washington county award to be presented February 20 by Washington Jaycees. A large number of nominations have been received and judging will begin soon. The county winner will attend a dinner in Oelwein when the state winner is announced. last year's state winner was Willard Palmer of Washington County.
Mrs Bessie Hanson operator of the American Beauty Nursing home faces beating charges over three elderly residents aged 80 plus. She is accused of tying a patient in a chair and mouth, placing another in cold water, and mistreating patients while misusing restraints and stealing patient property. A hearing was set for today.

Thomas M. Harvey 60, farmer near Washington, died at 12:05 a.m. in hospital after illness since October. Funeral services set for 2 p.m. Friday February 3 at Jones Funeral Home with Rev Carl Stiefel officiating. Burial in Elm Grove cemetery. He born August 23, 1895 in Washington County, married Mary A. Patterson May 26, 1922 at Muscatine. Survivors include wife two children Richard T. Harvey and Julia Daering, five grandchildren, five sisters and one brother. one brother Floyd preceded him in death.
Walter Kiesey Washington County assessor reports difficulty reaching residents for tax assessments with many housewives unavailable during the day. He urges wives to fill forms and sign for home stead and veterans exemptions to cut back after supper callbacks.
