Washington man charged with attempted break in at Towncrest Drug Fair
Steve Leroy Kelly, 24, of Washington, Iowa, was charged with attempting to break and enter a Towncrest Shopping Center Drug Fair store and with possession of a controlled substance. An off duty Iowa City officer arrested him about 11 p.m. Sunday. He was arraigned Monday and jailed in Johnson County on a $1,200 bond. Preliminary hearings are set for January 8.

Fair group names committee on land bid with city council
Washington County Fair Association members will meet Washington City Council Thursday at 3 p.m. in city hall to discuss acquiring title to land in Townsley Park currently leased by the city used for the annual 4 H fair. The meeting follows the Center Association request for one acre to expand the new Community Center site. The Red Cross offers a two night first aid course January 6 and 7 at the Farm Bureau building near Washington. Students may enroll with the Red Cross.

New Year Office Closures Announced Across Levels
Washington post office and federal state and city offices will be closed Wednesday for New Year observances. The Journal will publish at noon. post office lobby open with no mail delivery. Charges of possession of a controlled substance against Robin J Hampsher and Steven A Libe were dismissed in Magistrate Court. Larry C Zehr of Washington was fined 55 dollars for three traffic violations, including speeding and a stop sign offense, in incidents around 2 30 a.m. on December 21.

Three Station Holdups Reported in Iowa City Area
Three service station holdups were reported in the Iowa City area Monday night and today. A female suspect, about 22, 5-6, 110 pounds with a blondish brown wig, took money from Campus Standard at 9:40 p.m. A Hudson station hold up in Coralville occurred about 11 p.m. and a second in Coralville at 1 a.m. Two men tied and attacked attendants, escaping in a van with an undetermined amount of cash.
