Shenandoah reports Ann Welty daughter of Mr and Mrs Don Welty has grown from 1 pound 14 ounces at birth on Nov 21 to three pounds this week after months in Hand hospital incubator. The family notes her progress and health as she becomes a "big" girl.
Howard Miller 88 of Des Moines, an employee of Freeman Decorating Co., was in serious condition after falling about 35 feet from a downtown Des Moines building while removing a Christmas decoration. He sustained head and shoulder injuries on the sidewalk below.
Dr Grant Fairbanks of the University of Iowa told the National Association of Speech Teachers in Cleveland that fear makes men speak with voices similar to women's, their tones vibrating at the same frequency.
The Clinton city council adopted an ordinance granting $32,000 yearly savings to Interstate Power Co customers through reduced electrical rates. The discounts followed weeks of negotiations between company officials and the council.
Des Moines report by Leslie M. Carl a federal statistician notes a slight upward trend in prices received by Iowa farmers for most grain crops on December 15. He adds that live stock and livestock product prices stayed about steady.
Ottumwa report says Cecil Weir a 32 year old farmer was thrown as a wagon ran over him while scattering fertilizer. He received severe chest injuries and was left on the ground.
Des Moines reports Raymond W. Casaday of Mapleton named chief clerk in the state secretary of agriculture office at 2100 dollars yearly. Creighton J. Orr of Cedar Falls, former Clayton county state representative, named cashier in the state treasurer office at 2600 dollars yearly.
Two investigators from the state agricultural administration office in Des Moines Fred Roewe and Lester Vegers were in Muscatine checking on the county soil conservation office. They declined to comment on their findings as did William Cashman chairman of the county AAA committee.
Cedar Falls report says Glen Ward 26 a volunteer fireman rushed to aid a roof blaze at the H. W. Schultz home when his car overturned in a collision with a car driven by Daniel Alter 16 of West Union Ward was detained by the crash while responding to the fire and his condition is noted.
Coroner A. B. Beatty ruled Quinn Hawley aged 14 died from a brain concussion after slipping on a wet bathroom floor and striking the wall. A broken box of soap flakes lay nearby as the scene was described.
Unemployed truck driver Joe McMann rescued two boys from Cedar Lake in northeast Cedar Rapids. He used planks to reach the 25 foot hole and pulled out 9 year old George Mayer and his 5 year old brother Frank. George reportedly went under five times before the rescue.
United States rejects Japan's plan for a new order in Asia but allows talks to settle Sino Japanese tensions peacefully. Ambassador Grew delivered a final note to Japan outlining U S rights in China and warning against coercion while leaving room for future adjustments through proper international procedure.
Washington county drivers with chauffeur licenses faced a last day to renew for next year. About 80 truck drivers renewed yesterday bringing renewals to 408 of 485. Twenty four took exams with 10 passing and 14 failing. six duplicates issued and one renewal rejected for failing the vision test.
Des Moines report notes Chief John Hattery plans a law practice in Nevada and vows to keep Iowa highway patrol free from political interference. Hattery, formerly Story county sheriff, was appointed to head the patrol in 1935 by Secretary of State Mrs. Alex Miller after the patrol's organization.

Harrison was narrowly defeated for the leadership by Barkley following the death of Joseph W Robinson of Arkansas.

Paris December 31 The French Chamber of Deputies voted 325 to 226 to extend amnesty to soldiers who did not report for mobilization in September because they were with the Loyalist army in Spain. Francois Valentin deputy for Meurthe and Moselle said 50,000 Frenchmen were fighting in Spain in September as the Czech crisis demanded attention. He argued the courage of the Frenchmen should be respected but noted their absence deprived France of two army divisions.
