A column notes heavy fur bearing in the north this winter with Hauck, a trapper about 40 years north of Hamdt, sending valuable pelts to market. He shipped over 1000 dollars worth of furs and added 500 more from Humboldt trappers. He trapped 24 muskrats and mink along Des Moines rivers and 8 skunks, totaling around 500 dollars in pelts.
Workmen northeast of Glenwood on my Creek unearthed an ancient Indian village. Relics include toma hawks a long scraper a fish spear and many arrows were found.
Des Moines Lew Wallace state motor vehicle department chief extended the chauffeurs license deadline from December 31 to January 16. He cited a rush of applicants in the last week. Of 26,000 chauffeurs licensed last year, 13,000 have obtained new licenses.
Clara E. Kern 64, a Boone housewife, killed herself with a paring knife. She was found on a couch by her employer Mrs Elsie Lawrence, beside a partly eaten meal. Motive unclear to friends.
Mrs Florence Weaver ends a long tenure at the Clay County treasurer office dating back to 1887. She began as a deputy at age 18 and will be succeeded by Wiss Onalee of Spencer.
Strong winds swept across two Montgomery townships centered near Red Oak causing uprooted trees and property damage. No injuries or major livestock losses were reported.
Iowa City funeral services are held for Dr Sylvester Kk Ellis resident pastor of First Methodist Episcopal Church. Pastor Edwin F E Voet leads the service at the Iowa City church with burial at Oak Grove Cemetery Delaware Ohio. Ellis attended Ohio Wesleyan University and married Nellie Blanche Young in 1897.
In Cedar Rapids a 10 year prison sentence was given to Forrest Waitman 24 of Independence after hair found on a wrecked auto windshield tied him to the theft. Deputies traced the car to Dr H N Grim of Cedar Rapids and discovered Waitman had visited Grim before the car was stolen. The tuft of hair matched his.
Public Safety Commissioner W L Engelbert says the city council and civil service board will meet to consider grand jury recommendations for correcting alleged police department abuses. All police department members will be questioned about methods cited by the grand jury during a special session.
Canton Missouri truck driver Charles Mulvaney dodged a Rock Island electric at a crossing four miles west of here. He steered onto the track and outran the approaching train, but his truck slipped into a ditch and overturned. No serious injuries reported.
Reports from Tacoma state Dr. W. W. Mattson drove from his home while federal agents moved out seeking to trap the kidnapper of his son Charles. Rumors say the doctor planned a rendezvous to pay ransom and recover the boy, but officials offered no confirmation. The case centers on a ransom demand of 328,000 and a possible reunion within hours.
Des Moines reports total gasoline tax receipts for 1926 reached 13,695,875 dollars, the largest since the tax began a decade ago. The 1925 receipts totaled 12,687,170 dollars, with over 60 million gallons of gasoline taxed for auto and truck travel in Iowa.
Fred Bartholomew 78 a longtime Washington resident died at his East Main street home after several days illness. Funeral services set for Saturday at 2 PM at L A Jones Funeral Home with Rev M C Carstensen and Rev C B Strong officiating. Burial in Elm Grove cemetery. Surviving are his wife Eva and four children George Scott Smith Crozier. Bartholomew born June 30 1858 in Cedar township lived near town, was a Mutual Telephone Company manager and Rock Island stockyards weighmaster. He spent winters in California with his wife before returning to Washington. He was a devout Baptist member of Prairie Flower and Washington churches.

Merchants in Washington county offer gifts for the first baby born in 1937 as listed by the Journal. The first birth will be announced after the attending physician's report and parents are invited to pick up gift slips at the Journal. Previous honorees include 1926 David Wilbur Day and 1936 Franklin Wenger among others.
Tonight at 8 p m the Foursquare Gospel tabernacle hosts a special watch night service with music and singing. The sermon is titled The Midnight Ride of Paul Revere. After preaching, the young people lead the program followed by communion and a prayer service to end the old year and begin the new. All are invited.

New secretary Sehmitt replaces Clarence Logan and will work from 120 West Second Street. The board lists members for the 1927 committees across Membership, Big Days, Program, Tickets, Legislative, Industrial, and more.
Mrs. Edw. Rees, wife of Edward Rees, died last night near Crawfordsville after two weeks of illness that began with flu and developed pneumonia. Funeral services were held Friday at 1 15 at the home and 2 6 at the Methodist church in Ainsworth, Rev. Shook officiating. Burial is in Cambrian cemetery. She was born Sept 7 1895 near Ainsworth, daughter Elizabeth Roberts, and leaves husband, daughter Dorothy, her parents, and two brothers Will and Everett.
Clarissa Jones Hicks, known as Dee Wellman, died at 12 15 a m Thursday at the home of her son Frank Hicks after a stroke left her unconscious. She was born September 6 1844 in Licking County Ohio and married William Findley Hicks September 6 1865. Surviving are three children Jake Hicks Ralph Hicks and Frank Hicks, six grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Burial was in Wellman cemetery after a service led by Rev Paul Hamastor of the Methodist church.
Iowa Southern Utilities received word that a 25 year franchise was voted at Columbus Junction in a special election yesterday by 288 to 36. Manager Frank B. Miller credited the favorable result to the efficient conduct of the local business led by Phil Crail formerly of Washington.

Trinity Lutheran church hosts New Year’s Eve services with Theodore C. Meibohm speaking on Joshua 3 1 5. After a social hour the watch night devotion runs until after midnight. Officers for 1937 to be installed at morning worship include Harry Anderson president Edgar Oetjen secretary Alfred Wessler elder Walter Schroeder treasurer and others. The first voting members meeting is next Tuesday at 8 pm.
The New Year open house at the Y Friday will spotlight Hi Y boys from Washington and an exhibit of Washington produced articles. Companies such as American Pearl Button Cur ran Evening Journal MecCleery tile Washington Concrete and others will exhibit. The event includes a checker tournament and two concerts by the Washington Municipal band. Milburn McKay departs after directing the band.
Funeral services will be held Friday at 2 30 PM at L A Jones funeral home for William H. Plum of Cameron Missouri who died Wednesday night at his home after a yearlong illness. Rev. Arthur Atack and Rev. F W Eastwood will lead the service with burial at Cameron Cemetery. Plum was born June 6 1878 in Moberly Missouri and lived in Cameron Pleasant Plain Altamount and Washington before moving to Cameron. He married Grace M Herndon January 9 1902 and leaves his wife five children and four grandchildren plus a brother J B Plum. He worked as a telegraph operator at Rock Island before illness. He was a member of the Methodist Episcopal church in Washington.
Health funds from the 1936 Washington city Christmas seals campaign total $283.72 as of today. A hundred seal setters remain out and the committee asks for their return promptly to aid public health and the war on tuberculosis.
Eight to twelve watch night services at the Methodist church begin at eight o clock and run until midnight with people coming and going. The eight o clock ritual is followed by meditation and communion, and organ chimes at midnight usher in the new year.
Claude Soutch of Chariton admitted to killing his cousin by marriage Earl Nicholls of Ottumwa over a family quarrel. He said he lured Nicholls to an abandoned mine on Christmas Day, dumped the body in a 102 foot shaft, and stole $200. He attempted suicide later. Nicholls had been missing a week.
Mrs. Clif ford Towner of Floyd sustains a concussion and possible skull fracture after a collision involving her husband, M B Webster of St Ansgar and Posthumus of Hollandale and a truck driven by John. Drivers were blinded by train smoke.
Albert Theodore Escher a prominent community resident near Richmond died at 9 15 pm at his home three and a half miles south of Richmond after a year of declining health and a three and a half week illness. Funeral services will be at nine o clock Saturday at Holy Trinity Catholic church in Richmond with Rev. GC A B Van Waus presiding. Burial follows in Holy Trinity cemetery. arrangements are by Sherman’s funeral home. Born March 4 1867 in Jackson township he spent his life in the area south of Richmond. He married Delia Ann Schillig Sept 26 1893 at Holy Trinity. Surviving are his wife and children Edna Stumpf Washington Clem Escher Denver Vera Omaha Paul Washington Martha at home Hilda Seec rest of Omaha Vera Washington Grace Redeker Washington Richard at home. five grandchildren and one deceased. He lost his left hand in a 28-year-old accident but remained an active farmer and devoted family man.
