Des Moines assistant attorney general Lehan T Ry an says he has taken statements from 20 people who held Iowa liquor seals. Some have turned seals over to him as Gov Clyde L Her tag urged action to uncover the mystery and get to the bottom of the situation.
Police halted a car driven by Peter Lyshik moving backward at 25 mph after repairs reversed gears. Officers towed the vehicle to the station and ensured normal forward travel. A boy and dog incident in Charles City left both with minor injuries after a fall into an 18 foot well. Albert Ann and his terrier fell in while playing near Avon, were rescued by a group including his brother Edward. The dog was icicle covered but recovered to rejoin play. Iowa GOP names Rathke treasurer at Kirkwood Hotel conference. William Rathke of Glenwood was chosen treasurer. he is a former state commander of the American Legion and former Mills County bank president.
Henry Bartels parcels 800 acres to two couples. The land near five miles southwest of town is deeded to his son and daughter-in-law Mr and Mrs Lester Bartels and to his son-in-law and daughter Mr and Mrs Lee Weiss. Christmas presents mark a family transfer.
Des Moines suit targets the Iowa railroad commission seeking waiver of a 5 fee on Illinois trucks to force a reciprocal arrangement between the states. District Judge Frank Bankland heard the action aiming to stop the fee collection.
An official Red Cross report says a Swedish Red Cross unit of nine Swedes and 23 Ethiopians was wiped out in the Golo area. Only the commander Dr F Hylanders survived with slight wounds during an Italian air raid.
At a $1,600,000 lock and dam project six miles south of Peoria Illinois work stopped following a pitched fight between dredge operators and Chicago union workers. Three men claimed as Chicago union members were involved as 75 outsiders fired shots over the workers.
Al Rogers reports the death of his brother in law Samuel Bailey at his Long Beach home on the 23rd of this month. Bailey married Rose Rogers, Al’s sister, and they left the county about 25 years ago. They lived for many years in the Pilotsburg community before moving to California.
Illinois considers waiving new truck tax fees under reciprocal agreements. The law would otherwise tax town trucks either a flat weight charge of about 245 dollars a year or a per mile tax depending on the vehicle.
A truncated history of the county’s New Year’s babies from 1926 to 1933 notes births and families honored as the year’s first baby. Names include David Day 1926 and 1927 Henrietta Stewart, Shirley May Brown, David Allen Deiner, Billy Maresh Reighard, Carolyn Kern, Barbara Godwin, Marianne Taylor and others with times and places.

An unknown driver crashed into James E. DeWit’s car parked in front of the DeWit home on North Marion Avenue early Sunday. The other vehicle was only lightly damaged and the driver left the scene without stopping or identifying himself.
Sunday night attracted about 50 young people. The January Washington Chamber of Commerce meeting was moved from this Thursday to Thursday January 9. Secretary Clarence Logan announced the change saying it will start a new year for the Chamber.
Mrs Flora Belle Yeoman aged 48 died at 2 45 this morning at her daughter Mrs Bob Jacobs 831 South Avenue D after long illness and three months in county hospital She was born March 3 1887 in Nebraska and lived several years in Cappock community She was married to Sam Yeoman and is survived by him and other relatives.
A. H. Twinam begins work at an implement store in Donnellson Iowa with plans to open in about two weeks. Machinery is arriving and preparations for a special opening are underway. Mrs Twinam and daughter Carol Jean will move later, possibly after school ends.
In Kankakee Illinois Robert H. Kennedy aged 31 was sentenced to 25 years for armed robbery in Iowa and identified as the killer of James and Edward Burmeister at a filling station last summer. Alfred Ross of Davenport began a 150 year term for the murder of William Zeims after Kennedy allegedly told him of the crime while both rode a freight train.
The Eighth annual New Year’s Day Open House at the Y M C A invites all residents. Officers greet visitors in the lobby and events run from 2:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. including receptions, tournaments, exhibitions, and basketball games with no admission.
Judge Albert Reeves of a federal district court in Kansas City ruled the Guffey coal act invalid citing the constitution's tax clause. The decision came on an injunction petition by six Missouri coal companies to bar internal revenue collectors from enforcing the act.
Woodbury county attorney M E Rawlings weighs three actions after the jury failed to reach a verdict in the Ed L. O'Connor case. Possible retrial for O Connor, action against witness Max Duckworth for contempt, and prosecution of about 40 co defendants. Rawlings to consult with the county board today.
Indefinite postponement of the proposed strike against WPA projects in Iowa was confirmed by J C Lewis president of the state labor federation and spokesman for the statewide delegation seeking the prevailing wage on WPA work. The report lists seven children and notes Mrs Vera Yeoman of Washington as a member of the Washington Methodist Church.
Marriage licenses granted today to Merle Waters and Vivian Smith of Washington and to John Weerman of Washington and Elizabeth Ida Koehler of Ainsworth. The year total reached 99 with expectations of 100 by year end.
