About 500 people heard Dr. McCombe last evening at the Methodist church as he urged cooperative church unity for the new year. He contrasted Joshua and Moses, praised church reform, and noted upcoming watch night and 12 05 New Year welcome.
In Beverly Hills California two people were killed during an armed bank robbery as authorities investigate the high profile crime. The incident shocked residents and prompted a swift police response.
Washington council hosts a euchre and bridge card party in the new K C rooms drawing 200 attendees from Washington and nearby cities. Prizes awarded to Joe Walter Joel Te Bockhorst Mike Kate Shalla and Mrs Hubert Walker. Refreshments served. Upcoming meetings set for January 12 with Father Senbuehler and a 2:30 pm session today. Senator Smith W. Brookhart of Iowa urged a special congressional session to block the proposed eastern railroad consolidation into four systems. He called the plan a Wall Street profit scheme harming the public and urged action on agricultural relief. Brookhart criticized 5.75 percent railroad profits and watered stock totaling seven billion dollars as burdens on Americans, citing historic railroading gains and a controversial 1920 Interstate Commerce Commission valuation.
Eighty scouts and adults from AMP across the county gathered in Brighton for Washington County’s first public court of honor. Awards went to Tenderfoot Jack Gibson and Roy Grecian, Second Class Billy Cox Don Davis Jimmie Wells George Means Hubert Horton Hart Johnson Delbert Kyle Reid Horton, with Maurice Putman recognized for nearing age requirement. Bob Sorrell received a First Class badge. awards presented by Supt. J. H. Peet and Scoutmaster Teal Brown as Supt. C. J. Christianson presided.
A New Year’s matchup in the Little Six league features Burlington at Washington High School tomorrow night. Washington seeks to climb from the cellar after two losses to Muscatine and Ottumwa, while Burlington, after an overtime win over Ottumwa and a narrow loss to Mt Pleasant, aims to deliver a strong home-court showing. A large crowd is anticipated for the high-stakes game.

In Burlington Iowa on December 31 a thief stole Sheriff Delbert Murray’s automobile. Murray reported the theft to police and the vehicle was found early this morning after an intensive search.
The YMCA hosts a New Year open house with afternoon and evening programs in Washington. The event features a hospitality table, tea and refreshments, decorations by local youth groups, and a diverse schedule including demonstrations, a 2:00 to 8:00 program with orchestra, exhibitions, tumbling, and a volleyball game between young men and business leaders.
Miss Charlotte Matthews Leeper dies in Brighton after a stroke at 79. Funeral services set from her home at 1 PM with Rev Heidel. 2:30 PM at Center cemetery. Survived by husband of 58 years, an adopted daughter Osie Sagee, brother Ravilla Matthews, sister Minerva Covert.
Funeral services for Charles L Cunningham will be Thursday at two o clock at L A Jones funeral home with Res A A Wing of the Baptist church in charge Burial will be in Elm Grove cemetery He died shortly after his wife earlier Sunday of pneumonia and heart weakness leaving a son Andrew and three sisters May Foster Laura Adams and Stella Helwick He was born February 24 1873 in Washington and worked in several stores during his career He joined Masons and other orders in Ala Moxa and served as secretary of Masonic bodies He married Franc Railey in 1903 and Mrs Alice Peterson was to be away until after New Years.
George Struble travels to Pekin Illinois to assess a report tying a man jailed there to the June murder of Sheriff Fred Sweet and Marshal Aaron Bailey. The suspect, Herman Brovodsky alias Harry Shapiro, claims prior jail time in Omaha and Des Moines and says he has been in Pekin since Christmas. Authorities pursue multiple leads as they hunt the killers near the crime site.
Washington dispatch reports Alexander Legge of the federal farm board urging elimination or restriction of short selling in U S wheat markets. He says banning short sales would curb manipulation but warns markets must remain broad enough to absorb heavy shipment periods. He favors supervising train exchanges and consolidating Chicago Kansas City and Minneapolis boards to streamline grain trading.

A bandit robbed a person of a Bible and a hymn book on the way home from services at a Des Moines tabernacle. Miss Cora Porter of Fairfield is spending her vacation with Mrs. John Ranous and Ruth and Marion Morris of Geota shopped here Monday.
Edwin Griffith of the Washington Y M C A announced the lease of the McCleery Cabin on Crooked Creek south of town for use by Y boys next year. Groups of ten to twelve will rotate using the cabin for overnight and day hikes with Y leaders. The cabin, well equipped with a fireplace, will provide sleeping space for ten and supports outdoor work and nature study. Mrs Blanche M Clory and her generous support are noted in the arrangement.
Shepherds and fishermen on the Chatham Islands welcomed 1931 first, as Europe and America closed 1930. The tiny colony rang in midnight from Hanon island, while London and New York marked noon and morning. The dateline curves east along the 180th meridian, making the islands the world’s starting point for the new year. Local habits and meals followed as they prepared for New Year’s Day supper.
