How Rubber Heels Began In Printing History
A printer with sore feet found relief by placing a rubber mat at his case. The mat disappeared by noon, so he cut soles and heels from it and attached them to his shoes, unintentionally launching the rubber heel industry. By 1920, 125 million pairs were sold in the U.S., with Brockton, Massachusetts, reporting 84 percent of local shoes fitted with rubber heels. An Akron factory symbolically highlights the era’s boot and shoe activity.
