A westbound Chicago Rock Island Golden State Limited derailed east of Trenton Missouri due to a broken rail. Cars overturned and caught fire with reports of several passengers cremated, though not yet confirmed at press time. The wreck occurred between Trenton and Windale while the train ran at high speed.
Spencer Tragk a renowned New York banker and public figure died in a rear end crash on the New York Central railroad at Ironton on December 31.
The Golden State Limited bound west was wrecked near Trent on the morning of December 31 at 8 o'clock. The engine chair car and four Pullmans burned. Three people were killed including Fireman Linizer and Gertrude Warner of Armourdale Kansas and an unknown woman.

The body of J Tantow a hermit living seven miles north of Manly La was found by visitors. He had lived reclusively for twelve years and was about ninety years old. He had several sons but kept away from them and from others, and authorities think he died several days ago.
Des Moines reports William Foster, owner of Foster's and Grand Opera houses, and 14 year old Louis Bemis were found dead in a Foster residence room at 8:30 am as gas from an illuminated stove filled the area. Foster, per habit, lit the stove then slept. The Fern family expects an estate of about 240000 plus 25000 life insurance. Mrs. Foster and three daughters survive.
In Marshalltown Iowa a saloon war deepens as owners of three saloons file petitions to vacate a permanent injunction granted last October. They claim county attorney misrepresented intentions and that the decree lacked their consent and the defendants' consent.
Davenport December 31 P J Evans a switchman was killed and Robert Witt a fireman fatally injured when a switch engine overturned on a newly made grade Witt was pinned under the engine for an hour and removed with crushed legs scalds and probable internal injuries.

Cincinnati December 31 A compromise has been reached between the telegraphers and the Big Four railroad system eliminating the immediate danger of a strike.
Des Moines reports State Senator George Cosson special counsel in the attorney general office will run for attorney general to fill the vacancy created by Byers entering the Ninth district race. Cosson pledges to uphold Byers law enforcement policies with Waterloo rival Guy Feely also running. Possible bids include W L Eaton Osage railway commissioner and Nels J Lee Emmet county representative entering the race.
Des Moines December 31 Dr Louis A Thomas secretary of the Iowa state board of health refuses to recognize Dr G H Sumner of Waterloo as his elected successor. He will not turn over funds records or keys and has asked board officers to meet him to receipt for the office. If cannot come Thomas will lock the state house office and hold fees and records until heads of the boards arrive. He argues Sumner's election was illegal due to an incomplete full board.
Des Moines Dec 31 The Prohibition party eyes a statewide sweep as factions within the Republican Party fracture. At the state central committee meeting at the YMCA plans for temperance chautauquas were discussed and the April 6-7 Des Moines convention will nominate candidates for all state offices with Rev. James Corkey of Winterset urged as governor.
Charles P. Taft of Cincinnati has bought the grounds of the Philadelphia National League club from John L. Rogers and A. J. Reach. The announcement confirms the sale on December 31 in Philadelphia.
