Attorney General Erbe outlines proposed reforms to Iowa income tax to curb nonfiling, define gross income, and tighten enforcement. The plan would require timely returns, extend the tax evasion statute, allow prosecutions in the taxpayer’s county, and downgrade certain offenses to misdemeanors.
The Defense Department announced Ameri ca's Atlas satellite will orbit Earth for 45 days doubling original expectations. Launched December 18 the 8,700 pound satellite was due to reenter around February 1 though its batteries were expected to fail after 20 days. The longer life credited to precise missile guidance system performance.
Police hunted burglars who broke into the Melvin Savings Bank in Melvin Iowa and took about 1200 dollars from a desk drawer likely during late Sunday or early Monday. The vault remained untouched according to bank president Tom Benz.
Mid-Prairie voters face a January 22 election on a 650000 bond to build a new high school between Kalona Wellman and West Chester. The 450 student facility would include 15 classrooms two music rooms science units and vocational spaces with opening planned for the 1960 61 school year and about 240 first year students. Washington's YMCA to close for New Year with limited hours through New Year's Day.
Harry Levy announced that Jaycee committee members will judge this year's seasonal home lighting contest tonight. Judges will begin rounds shortly after 6 o clock and will require all entered decorations to have lights on for final decisions.

Section leaders in the YMCA membership enrollment will meet with their captains Wednesday morning at 7 a m for breakfast in Wings Cafe. Bill Boshart, general chairman, calls the meeting where captains will name men to serve as workers during the enrollment next month.

A sweeping southwestern snow storm crippled traffic from Texas to New Mexico and Oklahoma and left at least 50,000 without power in Albuquerque. In Farmersville, HI, a farm mother Ann Beierman 53 and her two sons Tom 13 and James 9 were found shot to death in their beds by the husband who returned from work. State’s Attorney Otto Funk said a shotgun was used and details remain uncertain. The other two children were at home. the shootings likely happened during the night.

A morning blaze in Delhi Iowa destroyed a two story frame building housing a grocery owned by Howard Meister and the Odd Fellows Lodge offices upstairs. Fire crews from Hopkinton Delaware and Earlville fought the flames for about an hour, using cistern water to prevent spread and limiting damage to the single structure.
Doctors say 12 ounce Gloria Hanses has a fighting chance if she receives nourishment soon. Born Sunday at Swedish Covenant Hospital after 342 months premature, the baby is ten percent inches long with a tennis ball sized head and is kept in an incubator. If she survives the odds improve to better than 50 percent for a normal future.
