A car stolen from Rickwood Motors in Birmingham is recovered abandoned after the thief alerted by a displayed sign reading Rob us, it's a steal. Police reported the incident as they investigated the theft.
President Eisenhower rejected Soviet charges of interference in Middle Europe and affirmed U.S. resolve to aid captive peoples. He spoke with aides on the State of the Union plan and golfed on a Florida trip, while flood disaster areas in Oregon were declared eligible for federal aid. Mrs. Eisenhower reported the birth of Mary Jean Eisenhower.
Des Moines reports E Howard Hill president of the Iowa Farm Bureau Federation told 2,500 bureau workers the bureau’s plan is not sensational but will address surplus crops and low prices. He urged expanding markets and cautious production, stressing the need to narrow consumer price spreads and maintain farmer self-respect amid financial strain.
A total of 142 4-H baby beeves have been weighed and tattooed this week for the coming project year. Final weighing was held in Washington this morning as county 4-H members prepare for the 1956 county club project competition. Last year 119 beeves were weighed and registered.

The Iowa Continental Telephone Company announces the arrival of about 20 000 feet of cable to be installed in the Washington exchange as part of the shift to automatic operation. The first shipment for the Washington cable projects signals a year 1956 plan to spend over 50000 dollars on new and replacement cable to meet rising telephone service demands and complete automatic conversion.
Washington County Farm Bureau reached over 90 percent of its 1956 membership quota as five carloads attended a Des Moines meeting for township chairmen and committees. Mills County led the state with its quota, led by Max Cross, former Evening Journal circulation manager, now County Field Man.

The United States studied a Red China complaint that a Chinese student is held unjustly in a Missouri mental hospital. Beijing says the student labeled the hospital a hell and accused the U.S. of preventing his return home. The State Department said it had no prior knowledge of the case.

Keokuk 19 year old William Harsch was charged with manslaughter in Superior Court after a December 9 traffic wreck north of Keokuk killed four teens. Harsch is hospitalized in Chicago on Navy leave. Two Tavern operators face beer sale to minor charges.

A fire at the Knights of Columbus hall in Dubuque damaged the main floor lounge after a Christmas scene wiring short. The custodian found the blaze. firefighters confined it to one room though smoke affected other areas. No injuries reported.
Kenneth King 48, a LaPorte City farmer, died in a Waterloo hospital from injuries after a car struck a semi truck on US 218 near Washburn Wednesday night. King’s car went down a 15 foot embankment onto Rock Island tracks. a train halted. The truck driver Robert Adams 39 Keota escaped injury.

Miss Squire, longtime superintendent of Washington County Hospital since 1946, resigns to become administrator at Murphy Memorial Hospital in Red Oak Iowa. Effective Feb 10 1956 she led service expansion and staff recognition programs and served on state licensing boards and local organizations.
Mrs. Cora E. Stevenson died early this afternoon at The Pines Nursing Home. The body was taken to Sherman’s Funeral Home, with arrangements not yet completed at press time.
Washington Jaycees will collect and burn used Christmas trees on Tuesday January 3. Residents must place trees on the nearest corner for citywide collection by Jaycees trucks in a single day public safety effort.
Marengo Iowa Fire Chief William O Turner 52 died after falling 18 feet from a ladder while fighting a blaze at the Marengo Ford Garage causing about 100000 in damage The coroner said skull fracture killed him on the way to Watts Hospital Turner had led the Marengo fire department for nearly a year and was a mechanic at the garage where the fire started from fumes near a repair panel truck.
The New Year's Eve services at the Methodist Church are in two parts. At 10:00 p.m. the Methodist Youth will have communion with Enid McConnell at the organ and Ruth Ann Brown as soloist, plus two youths in a dramatic worship. At 11:15 p.m. the main service features Mrs US. Smith on organ and Mildred McBride as soloist with a dramatic piece and a meditation by Dr W M Scheuermann on Ring in the New. Both services are open to the public.
The forecast from United Press Iowa calls for mostly fair conditions tonight with warmer temperatures in the west and north. Saturday will be partly cloudy and warmer with high values from 25 in the northeast to 35 in the southwest and another warm day Sunday with limited precipitation and near normal temperatures through Wednesday.
