Washington residents cast 2404 yes votes with 9 no and 18 spoiled ballots on a 10 million industrial bond to attract a Crane Company factory. Four wards show overwhelming support from 311 to 963 yes in latest tally, turnout about 40.3 percent of residents, higher than last November.

Chile Hit by Strong New Quake. 3 Dead, Severe Damage Feared

A strong new earthquake struck central Chile near Quillota La Ligua San Felipe and Cabildo while tremors continued in Taltal. Authorities report at least three dead and heavy damage in northern towns with thousands displaced. The epicenter 90 miles north of Santiago registered 7.75 on the Richter scale, prompting airlift of emergency supplies and a cautious forecast of potential aftershocks.

North Korea shells DMZ guardpost in brief attack

Record for industrial bonds in Washington tops turnout

The heavy vote for the city of Washington reached 98.9 percent in favor, matching Ft. Madison’s second Industrial Revenue Bond election. Washington’s turnout was a striking 40.3 percent of its population, a record for Iowa, with many adults voting despite the blizzard.
