A vast winter storm crippled travel from Texas and Oklahoma to the Midwest and Northeast. Motorists were stranded in a 23 mile stretch near Vernon to Electra Texas as trains and National Guard tanks delivered fuel and food. The storm dropped 17 inches in places like Fort Scott Kansas and brought heavy rains and tornadoes in the South with 20 injured by a Laurel Mississippi tornado.

W J Talbot 79 a retired farmer died at Skiff Hospital after being struck at a Newton intersection by a car Monday night. he slipped on ice and fell into the path of an oncoming car driven by James R.
