The Olds Ainsworth game set for New Year’s Eve in Ainsworth gym will be played Wednesday December 30. The first game starts at 7 p.m. in the gym.
International Harvester will lay off 400 production workers at its Louisville Kentucky plant and halt tractor production in January. Works Manager VP W Johnson cited declining tractor sales and high inventories as the reason, with output cut from 150 to 90 units per day and total employment dropping from 7,200 last May to about 2,900 after next month’s layoff.
George K. Plache, 28, faced disorderly conduct charges after allegedly pelting a woman driver, Mrs. Lottie Fry, with eggs as her car was cut off by a truck in Rockford. Fry said she saw Plache tossing eggs from his car. he was released on $28 bond pending a police court hearing.
Mrs. Florence Jeannette Cook 64 of 1103 North Eighth avenue died this morning at her daughter's home Mrs. Otha McDonald after months of illness Arrangements are with Jones funeral home She was born Feb 23 1889 near Crawfordsville and married John A Cook in 1918 He died in 1928 She lived in Washington four years and was a Legion auxiliary member Survivors include daughter Mrs McDonald of Washington son Allen of Tipton seven grandchildren and many siblings with one brother and one sister deceased.
Funeral services for Leslie Payne were held at 9 a.m. today at St. James Catholic Church with Rev. R J Kinnavey in charge. Pallbearers were Don Blacketer Ross Secrest Harry Turner Paul Wolfe Elmer Peiffer William Boyer. Burial was in Elm Grove Cemetery with Jones Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Dick Wiley was named master counselor of the DeMolay chapter at a Monday evening meeting in the Masonic temple. Other officers include Bill Sherman senior counselor and Norman Benn junior counselor. Dick Fuhr retires from the post as twenty two members attended, four DeMolays home from college, and two Mother's circle members served refreshments.
Two American captives, Pvt Homer H. Cox and Leland H Towers, were released by Soviet authorities in Berlin at the Karlishorst HQ. Cox, 33, from Oklahoma City, had been missing since Sept 22 1949. Towers, 39, from San Francisco, disappeared in 1951.
A lone gunman struck four times in six hours Monday night and escaped with about $300 from three service stations and a drug store in Des Moines. Police believe the four robberies were committed by the same man, with similar appearance and technique described by all victims.
A cold wave moved into north western Iowa today and will spread across the state by tonight, bringing the coldest weather of the season by Wednesday morning. Temperatures will dip to 10 to 20 degrees below zero in the north and zero to 10 below in the south, with strong winds and light snow reducing visibility. South Korean President Syngman Rhee urged the United Nations to stop talks with the Communists and reopen the Korean War. He renewed a pledge for peace talks within 90 days but warned Korea must act with allies to defeat the Reds, saying unilateral action would strain overseas relations.
Washington AP reports three men received Jaycee Key Men awards for community service. Secretary of State John Foster Dulles outlined plans to start international talks on Eisenhower's atoms-for-peace initiative before the Berlin Big Four meeting. He noted a Moscow note differed slightly in wording but its significance was unclear.
Keith Romine of Wellman was bound over to the grand jury and bond set at 500 dollars this morning by Justice of the Peace W. B. Webster of Wellman.
Kalona churches sponsor a union candle light communion service on New Year's Eve at 7 30 p m in the Christian church. The service centers on a nine minute meditation on The Last Supper by Leonardo Da Vinci with special music. The organizers say the service is open to all wishing a religious note for the New Year.
Mrs. A W Yard 72 of 214 East Fifth Street died at 10 20 p m Monday December 28 after months of illness. Funeral services set for 2 p m Thursday December 31 at Jones funeral home with Rev Earl Longfellow officiating. Burial will be in Ainsworth cemetery. Maye Blanche Nicholson born February 11, 1881 in Ainsworth daughter of T J Nicholson and Emma Crawford Nicholson married February 13, 1901 to Arthur W Yard who died April 22, 1952. The couple lived on a Crawfordsville area farm and moved to Washington in 1956. She belonged to Eastern Star White Shrine Pythian Sisters Fortnightly Navajo club and the Baptist church. Survivors include three sisters Mrs A H Twinam Center Barnstead NH Mrs R S Dix Modesto CA and Mrs Floyd Plankenhorn Washington and one brother Dwight Nicholson Iowa City. Two infant sons preceded her in death.
Indianapolis man Robert Eugene Reagan 22% previously married four times and divorced once. He pleaded guilty to bigamy and begins a 120 day sentence plus a $25 fine. His first wife Clara Mae Peacock of New Castle is the mother of two children. Reagan also married Rosie Davis and three other women without divorces, leading to the charge.

Maggie B. Foster, 77, of 6323 Fast Jefferson street died at 5 a.m. after a brief illness. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, December 31, at Jones funeral home with Dr. William J. Grossheim officiating. Burial is in Elm Grove cemetery. Born June 6, 1876 in Washington, she was the daughter of George L. and Belle McKibben Foster and a Washington county resident most of her life. She was a member of the Presbyterian church. Survivors include three brothers, George F. Foster, John F. Foster, and Boyd Foster, all of Washington, plus several nieces and nephews. one sister and two brothers preceded her in death.
Cavell Jobert the WKNB weather forecaster missed her nightly TV forecast due to a snowstorm delaying broadcasts in New Britain Connecticut. The incident prompted local viewers to await rescheduled weather reports.
A group of American college newspaper editors led by David Barney of Reed College and Richard Ward of the University of Chicago arrived in Moscow by plane from Helsinki. They will spend three weeks in Russia traveling outside Moscow to observe daily life. Other members include Craig Levitt and William Ives of Knox College, Richard Biden and Greg Shuker of Northwestern, and Dean Schoelkopf of the University of Minnesota.
