A column notes attorneys in the second judicial district meeting here endorsed District Judge Charles F. Wennerstrum of Chariton for a seat on the Iowa supreme court and urged him to announce candidacy in the Republican primary.
Iowa City public ity director Eric C Wilson of State University of Iowa plans to marry Miss Elizabeth Armstrong Ritson of New York City on January 25. The bride is formerly of Chariton and works as secretary to Ray Murphy, a former Iowan and now assistant general manager of the Association of Casualty and Surety Executives in New York. They will wed at the Ritson home in Chariton.
Briley Briley, 25, of Boone former resident, awaits a hospital bed at Temple University Hospital Philadelphia for the new frozen sleep cancer treatment. Rollins Hosiery employees' charity column raised 700 dollars to fund his trip and friends started an additional appeal to help. Hospital capacity delays admission awaiting vacancy.
MUSCATINE The Amalgamated Clothing Workers of America filed a complaint against Hawkeye Pearl Cotton Co over the discharge of Beulah Ludman a shop chairman. The union says the firing breached a shop chairmen immunity pact while the company cites the employer’s right to hire and discharge.
DES MOINES The state board of education told Gov. Wilson it keeps a constant watch against duplication at state educational institutions. The report fulfills a legislative resolution to undertake a study after proposals to consolidate engineering divisions at Ames and Iowa City. Dr Samuel P Capen of Buffalo advised against merging the divisions last May.
The second annual report on the F. L. Maytag estate by Executors Tim J. Campbell and Ray O. Bailey shows disbursements of 2,506,668 from May 1938 to May 1939. Taxes paid totaled about 1,500,000 with legacies of 375,000 plus a partial 200,000 distribution to L. B. Maytag of Colorado Springs.
Frank A Kehm of Mason City named as defendant in a $3,500 slander action filed by Mrs. Alice Winter. The suit quotes alleged false defamatory statements made in Nora Springs on November 17 and 21, with both parties noted as Townsend club figures.
As temperatures plunged toward freezing 65 Sioux City coal drivers walked out in a dispute between the Truckers union A F L and the Sioux City Coal Dealers association. Union agent Howard W. Fouts said only three coal loads were delivered while dealers secretary William Wells claimed deliveries were proceeding smoothly and that about 80 men were available for service.
In Helsinki on December 29 Russia deployed about 100000 troops along the western end of the Mannerheim line. Air power supported the attack while front observers warned of possible airborne landings to disrupt communications. Russian forces pushed on the Karelian isthmus front aiming at Viipuri as they repaired the rail line disrupted earlier by Finnish withdrawals.
Highway Patrolman Ben Bentzinger announced a delay in renewals for 1940 licenses. He said extensions push the deadline to January 15 after 342 renewals in Washington County by today and expectations of over 400 by day’s end. Truck drivers lose more Fridays in Washington for renewals.
Judge P. J. Siegers of Newton finished the November district court term in Washington with the next term set to open January 15. He addressed probate orders and other matters and sentenced two men who pleaded guilty in a session prompted by County Attorney Richard A. Stewart. Jacob Melvin Hochstetler of Iowa City received a one year sentence to the state reformatory.
Renewed shocks in the eastern Turkish earthquake zone report a potential death toll near 160000, with Erzincan province seeing about 8000 deaths and Zara village claiming 1500. Reports say the Erzincan complex and nearby towns face obliteration as hospitals and the military academy lie in ruins.
Franklin D. Roosevelt Jr and his wife escaped serious harm when their car collided with a halted truck on a road near Winchester Virginia as they were driving back to Washington D C. The incident occurred early today leaving the Roosevelts with minor injuries and the driver unhurt.

Anamosa faces charges of driving a motor vehicle without the owner's consent after taking a car from a Washington street weeks ago. He was represented today by Attorney L. J. Kehoe. Everett Green of Keota was fined $300 plus costs for operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated.
The county auditor reports the abstract of the tax list shows Washington county will collect $77,023.47 next year, up from $738,033.29 this year. Real estate and personal property taxes form the bulk, distributed among towns townships and public service corporations across funded categories.
David E Brumback 77 died at his West Chester home after a five week illness. Funeral at West Chester Methodist Church with interment in Keota cemetery. Survived by wife Fannie, son Owen of Davenport, three stepchildren, a sister and brother, and four grandchildren.
James Q. Blodgett father of John Blodgett of Washington died yesterday morning at 8 25 in Iola Kansas He had been bed fast for a long time suffering a stroke a year ago and another the day before Christmas Details of the funeral plans were not received yet today.

The Agricultural Adjustment Administration announced 1940 state corn acreage allotments with an average 12 percent reduction across the 12 corn belt states. Total county allotments reach 86,628,000 acres, up from 41,256,000 a year earlier, with Illinois, Iowa and Missouri listed among states and their 1939 comparisons. Lard exports for 1939 through November rise to 258,355,000 pounds, led by the United Kingdom as chief buyer.
The coldest weather so far this winter was forecast for parts of Iowa. Temperatures would fall to zero in the northwest and rise to 12 above in the southeast, with other readings at ten above in the northeast and five in the southwest. The region lay on the edge of a cold wave pushing readings to 12 below in Nebraska.
Cat O J Brown of the 113th Cavalry announced seven days of special field training for National Guard soldiers this winter. The schedule includes mounted and dismounted drills, fifteen mile hikes, combat problems, and night exercises with inspection and muster to conclude. All 65 troopers are expected to participate, reporting at the armory Monday at eight.
Des Moines goodwill team leaders from Plymouth Congregational Church Temple B Nai Jeshurun and Drake University will travel to Washington for discussions on Making America Safe for Differences. The January 10 event at Washington High School is hosted by County Superintendent Lester B. Krabill with dinners for rural and town school staff preceding the meeting.

Washington business centers will largely close Monday New Year’s Day with exceptions for food stores. Banks and courthouse offices will close, public library shut, barbers and lumber yards closed, drug stores near noon to four, mail deliveries halted, stamp window open 8 to 9 a.m. for stamps only.
In December 1,821 Washington county autos were licensed for 1940, up from 1,342 on the same date last year. Trucks and used-car transfers climbed, with 244 trucks licensed now versus 170 then and 28 used-car transfers recorded yesterday. Over $100,000 spent on new cars and licenses this month. Names of recent new-car licensees include Nita Corbin, Joe Simmering, Fr. W. Eastwood, Mrs. C. L. Drollinger, William Gammon, and others in Washington and nearby towns.

Dave Elder and Melvin Gingerich arranged a showing of pictures from State University for the YWCA and YMCA New Year open house next Monday from two to five P M. Christner B. Christner a 35 year old resident of Wayland was convicted in Henry county of operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated. He received a fine of 750 dollars or 250 days in county jail. He had earlier served four months in Washington county jail for a different charge and a term in the state reformatory at Anamosa.
