Court halts giant Sheet & Tube Bethlehem merger

In Youngstown Ohio a judge blocked the $1 billion merger between Youngstown Sheet & Tube and Bethlehem Steel. Judge David G. Funeral services set for Tuesday at 2 PM at A. Jones funeral home for Mrs. Charles J. Cunningham who died Sunday morning after pneumonia. Born January 4, 1875 in Clinton County Iowa to Willard Hailey and Mary Warner, she lived most of her life in the area and worked in local stores before marriage in Denver to Charles L. Cunningham.

Blaze at Lemmon home not heavy. repairs planned

Rainy discovery of a fire in the Lemmon apartment at the southeast corner of the square prompted prompt work to contain it. Firemen, aided by an extinguisher sent by Mr. Lemmon, doused the blaze beneath the fireplace, preventing heavier loss. A second outbreak occurred elsewhere in the home, leading to renewed use of extinguishers and plans to modify the fireplace and repair the damaged floor once losses are adjusted.

Million Dollar Incomes Nearly Double in 1928 Tax Year

Taxpayers earning more than one million dollars nearly doubled in 1928 to 111 reported cases. New York led with 24% of millionaires, while total reported income reached $987,813,519 before deductions. Wages and salaries supplied the largest share of income, with $10.862 billion for all taxpayers.

State Income Tax Expected to Start Next Year

Des Moines reports a pledge that if a state income tax law passes next month it would not take effect until 1981. C F Clark of Cedar Rapids said a drafting error earlier set a 1920 income base for 1921 but will be corrected. The tax aims to replace the property tax and would levy on 1930 incomes as an additional levy, not a replacement.

Sheriff-elect William C Walker Dies in Des Moines

Des Moines December 24 William C Walker sheriff elect of Polk County died today from peritonitis after an appendectomy. At 40 he had just secured bond and prepared to take office. His death creates an unusual Polk County political situation as the term of the man he would have succeeded remains in office.

Seven Lives Lost In Fire At Queen's Hotel Cochrane

A devastating blaze at the Queen's hotel in Cochrane Ontario killed at least seven people as flames swept through the center of the three story building where more than 200 slept. Police believe the fire started in the office and the search for additional victims continued as ruins cooled. Nearby funds were listed from several local businesses as the Y's Men’s Club explained distribution efforts aided needy families at Christmas.

Oil Well Blows Out in Oklahoma City Field

A historic Emerson- Joyce No 1 well on the Oklahoma City field blew out today and flowed wildly. Drillers report a gas output of about 40 million cubic feet daily with great fire risk. Also noting Mr and Mrs H L Winscot visiting relatives in Holliday Missouri.

New Year Program at YMCA With Exhibitions and Games

A New Year program at the YMCA features a chemical demonstration, a model airplane flying display, checker tournament, and a high school orchestra. North Dakota Capitol Burns. Documents Lost
