Police and coast guards guard piers while anxious relatives wait, amid reports of attempted pier storms and deportation fears. Italian passengers form the bulk of detainees with several hundred Greeks also held aboard ships.
Paris December 2 The Chamber of Deputies voted 475 to 58 to approve government credit measures totaling 12 billion francs. The vote follows earlier government reassurances amid economic pressures and financial reforms.
A second Sinn Fein assault on Viscount French at the vice regal lodge in Dublin fails after guards repel the raid. One attacker is killed and a guard officer dies of wounds. four suspects are arrested amid a dawn assault around 1:50 AM.
The war office reports Japanese troops in Siberia on the southeast side of Lake Baikal to maintain communications for possible evacuation of officials and residents. Anarchy spreads in three far eastern Siberian provinces with Irkutsk unrest as mutineers seize the left bank of the Angara.
Parkerstare West Virginia dispatch reports Luciano Petton one of the oldest men in the United States died at Little Hocking Ohio near Parkersburg at age 128. Petton was born a slave in Virginia and served the Creel family through slavery and freedom across generations.
Washington December 22 Daniel S Roper the commissioner of internal revenue weighs measures to curb the sale of wood alcohol sold as whisky and linked to many deaths. Congress meets January 5 with expectations of swift recommendations to curb the poison. Senator Morris Sheppard of Texas expresses support for action. Roper says he is studying the manufacture and sale but has no final plan yet.
A Wilson era proposal urges creation of a national industrial tribunal with nine members from employers employees and public interest. Washington notes the plan aims to mediate labor capitalist disputes and protect public interests with headquarters in Washington and a January reconvening for open discussion inviting broad input from all walks of life.
The plan calls for a unanimous vote on appeals and public majority and minority reports if no decision is reached. It divides the nation into 12 districts with a president appointed chairman per region for three years. A national tribunal may appoint vice chairs and regional boards with employer and employee representatives rotating through regional service.
United States Marshal Edward J. Lyden arrested four men on federal warrants in Chicopee Massachusetts on December 20. Two are charged with wartime prohibition violations and two with illicit transportation of liquor across state lines. The arrests stem from a probe into more than sixty deaths in the Connecticut valley from drinking wood alcohol in a whisky mixture sold to the public.
Lowell firemen voted to withdraw from the American Federation of Labor at the request of the fire commissioner. A secret ballot was used in Lowell Mass on December 29.
Lena Bennett arrives at the county jail as investigators pursue the Brown shooting. She is detained from Sandusky Ohio and identified as a waitress aged twenty five. Ruth Prevost Brown, widow of J Stanley Brown, remains in the jail with differing temperaments noted by officials.
Vladivostok December 20 Admiral Kolchak commander of all Russian government forces opposing the Bolsheviks in Siberia has retired from active command and appointed General Semenov to succeed him. The move comes as illness prompts the resignation and leadership pass to the new chief.

Western Union Telegraph and Telephone announces a wage increase affecting about 10000 employees. Those with over one year of service get 15 percent, while staff with six months to a year receive 10 percent. The changes apply to workers earning above a certain minimum.
