Ron Carey aged 20 is jailed in Washington County on warrant charges of receiving and concealing stolen goods and larceny in the nighttime. About $2,500 in merchandise cash and checks were taken in the Oct 15 burglary of Gambles Store in Brighton. First arrest in the case.

Garage Fire Destroys Residence Garage in Mary Ann Smith Home
A fire at 309 N Ave B destroyed a garage and its contents Tuesday night. Washington firefighters arrived at 10 25 p m but could not prevent the blaze. Two nearby structures sustained damage and no cause was released though two Smith youths allege seeing someone near the building at the time. No injuries reported.

Union wins first round over regents overtime plan
DES MOINES UPI The AFSCME union representing Board of Regents employees blocked a new overtime plan from taking effect pending a formal hearing. Polk County Judge Anthony Critelli ordered regents to keep the current overtime policy. The plan would pay overtime after 80 hours in a two week period instead of the 40 hour week standard.

Gambler gets 30 year term in state trooper shooting
David Gamble 23 of Forest City was sentenced in Hancock County District Court to 30 years for firing at a state trooper during a high speed chase in October. He was convicted earlier this month in Floyd County District Court of assault with intent to commit murder after the incident that stretched across Winnebago and Hancock counties. The trial was moved from Floyd County on a venue change.
