Police seized Stanley Weinstein and Jay Sanders after a bartender noticed them wiping fingerprints from glasses after each drink. The two, aged 25 and 38, were in Panorama City California when apprehended.
Scott Wilcox was named one of 25 master swine producers in Iowa at a Des Moines banquet on December 11. He and two Washington county peers, Keith and Duane Yoder, joined 135 applicants in earning the honor. Wilcox operates near Washington, raising 600 pigs a year on a 60 acre corn farm, with sows from Duroc and Tamworth lines and a diet of oats and protein.
Clinton teenager Lew Sears 17 faces a scheduled 10 a.m. Friday hearing on charges after allegedly threatening a policeman with a shotgun when officers attempted to arrest him for striking his mother on December 20. Sears was arraigned on resisting arrest and jailed in lieu of 300 dollar bond.
Clinton Iowa AP reports Mississippi River shipping at the lock reached an all time 4,233,889 tons this year. Lockmaster Gene Hartman announced the rise, exceeding the 1953 record by over 500000 tons with the Rock Island Illinois District also breaking its prior high by nearly one million tons.

British brothers Sydney and Alfred Gold report 15 former U S GIs among members of a Renegades Club in Soviet Germany. They fled London in 1953, worked in a locomotive factory, were captured escaping, held in Dresden, and later released after signing a statement of good treatment.
The standoff between Chinese Nationalist and Communist forces paused due to severe winter weather. Only a 20 round Red artillery bombardment hit Ta tang Island while the coast remained quiet otherwise. Nationalist Col. Lu Ta noted the Communists keep building coastal air bases and Russia has sent light jet bombers to reinforce existing air units along the coast.
John Wesley Wable, 26, dubbed the phantom killer, was sentenced to die in the electric chair for the July 28 1953 murder of truck driver Harry F. Pitts in the Pennsylvania Turnpike case. Wable, asserting innocence and claiming Jim Parks was the true culprit, plans an appeal to the state Supreme Court. He also faced indictments for another trucker’s slaying and a near fatal shooting.

In Manchester Iowa a coroner's jury ruled the deaths of Judy Timmer and Judy Garthoff 10 in Waterloo as due to the negligence of Gilbert Timmer 20 who drove the car involved in a collision with a truck 72 miles west. Timmer was seriously injured and his brother Ronald 8 was in critical condition. The truck driver Marlin Burch escaped injury.
President Eisenhower was gratified by the French National Assembly approving West Germany's entry into NATO. He withheld full comment until the Assembly acts on remaining Paris accords to rearm West and finalize allied integration.
