Dramatic Greenland Rescue by Air Corps Pilots
Two air force fliers from Westover Field, Emil G. Beaudry and Charles H. Blackwell, landed a twin engine C-47 on Greenland ice cap at 9:08 a m to rescue 12 marooned comrades. They ferried the crew to Bluie West Field 270 miles away as seven had stranded since Dec 9 and five others joined through failed prior attempts. The Saipan carrier meanwhile moved toward Greenland to back up the helicopter rescue plan after glider attempts failed amid 100 mph winds.
