Funeral services will be Monday afternoon for Henry William Duesenberg 77 of Indianapolis a horticulturist who developed and named the Hancock apple after his home county. Survived by five sons three daughters three sisters and one brother August Duesenberg of Indianapolis and a late brother Fred Duesenberg who helped build the Duesenberg automobile.
Mary Ann Van Alst nine of Lovilia who suffered infantile paralysis last spring received a radio after writing to President Roosevelt. The letter went to the Red Cross and Monroe county chapter arranged the gift. Mary, daughter of Mr and Mrs Gabel Van Alst, Lovilia farmers, is now recovering from pneumonia.
Arthur M. Bartlett a well known amateur golfer and court reporter has been named reporter for District Judge Edward Simmons of Centerville who will fill the unexpired term of Judge C F Wennerstrum elected to the Iowa supreme court
Sioux City resident Joe Harris, 47, arrested while giving away pork to stockyards district residents for Christmas dinner. He is en route to Fort Madison penitentiary to serve a five year sentence for larceny of a domestic animal after admitting stealing and butchering a pie belonging to farmer Paul Lottshaw near Sloan.
Van Meter Hob Feller, Cleveland Indian pitcher, announced a contract and will be one of the instructors at the Ray Dean baseball school in Palatka Florida next February. He will leave Feb 7 on the Feller Special train carrying Iowa boys. The five week school will feature stars including Babe Ruth as instructors.
Frank Piotter of Tama pleaded guilty to malicious injury to buildings and property. District Judge L. J. Kirkland sentenced him to five years in Fort Madison penitentiary. The Piotter family lived in a Tama county owned house and he allegedly damaged furniture and a horse.
Waterloo police said Mrs. Rose M. Sehneider reported a thief jumped into her moving car in a violent burglary. He grabbed her handbag, threatened her with a gas pipe, and forced her to drive before jumping out. The handbag was later found with jewelry but missing eight dollars.
The Washington Municipal Band of 40 under Milo Sorden will perform a 90 minute concert at the Y New Year open house next Wednesday January 1. The program aims to attract many music lovers and all are invited. The county checker tournament will open at 1 30 PM in the west room on the second floor. Last year W F Alexander won first with Charles McAvoy second and Theo Turner third. Any checker player in the county may enter. LeRoy Pratt will show two reels of colored travel pictures and two reels of Y pictures about the Washington association for local interest.
Ten Washington county farm boys will attend the Iowa Boys 4 H short course at Iowa State College December 29 31 with J W Chandler accompanying. Notables include Gov George Wilson Fireball Bob Feller and Dr Chas I Finley. Boys register Sunday afternoon hear opening program and judge Monday.
Twenty two new court actions have been filed for the January term of district court opening Monday January 6 with Judge J G Patterson of Oskaloosa presiding. Eight are law cases mostly suits on notes and accounts. Four quieting title actions and four foreclosures. Three divorce cases two partition suits and one suit for annulment of marriage.
The International Union of the UAW CIO affiliate ordered a walkout of 2300 production workers at the International Harvester plant in Fort Wayne next Monday after deadlocked talks with the company. Local president Charles R. Schrock said a 48 hour notice was given under a defense commission agreement as the plant supplied trucks for national defense.
The Good Fellows fund in Washington raised 55 dollars this year. Twenty five dollars were found in boxes left in businesses for deposits. Y's Men’s Club sponsored the drive and delivered 126 baskets, with 106 from the Y's Men’s project and 20 from the Catholic Daughters who provide Christmas dinners. Food dealers cut prices to help meet the shortfall.
Ben Hentzinger of the state highway patrol conducted Friday driving license examinations in Washington. About 13 percent of locals renewed their chauffeur licenses for next year, bringing total renewals to 519. Fourteen drivers obtained licenses and seven failed exams with one instruction permit issued. Several renewals came from neighboring counties while some Washington county residents renewed elsewhere. An extension past year’s window is noted for 1941 renewals, with stricter requirements for those not holding 1941 licenses by January 1.
A report from Des Moines dated December 27 states the induction of the 24th division Iowa National Guard is postponed. Details on new timing or reasons were not provided in the available text.

David Deiner eleven year old son of Mr and Mrs Edward Deiner of the Wellman community is in critical condition after a tractor exploded while heating the manifold on the Deiner farm three miles north and east of Wellman. Four Denver boys were present. Menne Deiner suffered minor burns saving the fire. David was transported to a hospital and a small fire caused minor building damage.
Adjutant General Charles H. Grahl announced the delay due to unfinished quarters at Camp Claiborne Louisiana. The postponement shifts the start of federal service to February 10.

Farley of Indianola Iowa has been elected first grade teacher at Lincoln School she will replace Mrs Bob Young who resigned after her marriage She will be in Washington to start work when schools reopen after Christmas on Monday Jan 6 Farley holds a BA from Iowa State Teachers College Cedar Falls and studied at Simpson College Itnlapola and the State University of Iowa She has taught in Martensdale and Dallas Iowa and comes highly recommended as a primary teacher
Rev J F Doel will preach at Washington Presbyterian church tomorrow morning due to illness of Fairfield pastor Dr F W Eastwood who is recovering from an infected hand in county hospital. No evening service at Fairfield. Doctors advise another day in hospital.
Harry C. Kyle of Brighton, 69, was struck by a car on road 18 south of Ainsworth and taken to Washington county hospital around four yesterday afternoon. He suffered cuts to the head and face and painful injuries to a shoulder and hip, with X rays to follow. the driver, Joe Myers of Parnell Iowa, fled uncertainty as to blame while Kyle recalled nothing of the collision.
Two women are dead and two injured after a rear wheel of a truck driven by Floyd C. Van Atta of Muscatine Iowa struck them while they stood in a safety island waiting for a street car. Van Atta blamed wet pavement for the skid and swerving.
A local fair showcases a prize winning pumpkin weighing 81 pounds. The display draws visitors to view the oversized gourd and celebrate the farmers behind the record.
United Press reports warned the United States against plans to aid Britain via Ireland and to ship American supplies in American vessels. London said British planes bombed southern Norway ports while Italian prisoners in Libya rose to 38 thousand including 24 thousand Italians. British air forces attacked Italian positions from the Libyan coast to Eritrea and Ethiopia with emphasis on Bardia. Rome claimed an Italian warship hit British forces in Libya and that Italians destroyed a British mechanized unit. Reports also claimed German vessels are being armed in Japanese harbors for Pacific raids and German supply ships may rendezvous with raiders in Japanese islands. Greek forces attacked the Italian pivot point in Albania near their front since Italy invaded Greece two months ago.
The United Presbyterian congregation invites members to a New Year dinner next Wednesday at noon followed by a welcome program for Rev. George Kerr. Families are asked to bring one dish per two people and sufficient table service for all attendees.
Lucille Reed announces the relocation of her beauty shop from west of the Oetjen store to the former Shorty’s barber shop on West Washington street. She plans to move equipment next week and aim to open in the new location by Friday noon, January 3, after a final day at the old shop next Tuesday.
