Leon Frazer Held After Knife Attack On Deputy In Iowa

Leon Frazer 29 is expected to face a charge after knifing a deputy sheriff and a night marshal during an arrest attempt at Anderson Tavern in Leon Iowa. He escaped wounded in a gun battle with Night Marshal Raymond Vanderpool, was hunted by about 35 officers, and captured Sunday hiding in a haystack near the Iowa Missouri line.

Keota Rural Carrier’s Long Mail Route Milestone

Keota mail carrier FitzSimmons, who began in Sigourney and served Keswick before Keota since 1934, estimates 500000 miles on routes. The Keota route grew from 28 to 56 miles serving about 170 families. He forded creeks and beat snow drifts delivering mail with few accidents, aside from a cow collision and dog casualties.

Mrs. Wilber Miller Dies At 81 In Bolar Nursing Home

Mrs. Wilber Miller aged 81 died at 3:30 a m at Bolar Nursing Home where she had resided nearly a year. Her home was 214 East Second Street. Funeral services set for 2 p m Wednesday at Sherman's Funeral Home with Dr. C R Reed officiating. Burial in Elm Grove Cemetery. Survivors include two daughters Mrs P H Frank of Waterloo and Mrs Earl Simmerman of Washington, a son Charles E Miller of Sun Valley California, four grandchildren, one great granddaughter, and four brothers Frank Lester Peter Bert. Seven siblings preceded her in death.

The Julien Dubuque bridge across the Mississippi River, toll free since this morning, reopened in brief ceremonies. Miss Hazel Skemp, who cut the first toll opening 11 years ago, cut a second ribbon for a car driven by Hubert B. Dukes and Standley Wiedner to cross without charge.

Slippery Highways Warn Motorists Across Iowa

Car Stolen Here By Man Arrested Friday Night in Cedar Rapids

James Anthony Stewart of Petersburg Illinois was arrested in Cedar Rapids Friday night after a chase across northeastern Missouri and southeast Iowa. He allegedly stole multiple autos including a Baxter vehicle at the B D Duwa farm near Washington and wrecked another car three miles south of Williamsburg before being captured. He remains in custody in Cedar Rapids.
