Civil War Veteran Eli M Hutchinson Dies at 101
Eli M Hutchinson 101, a Civil War veteran and Iowa pioneer, died at his daughter Mrs H Morphew’s home. Born in New York, he moved to Iowa in 1854 and served in Company K 27th Iowa Infantry, seeing action at Vicksburg and other battles. Chattanooga Tenn December 7 UP James Chariton escaped after a gun duel in which his companion and an officer were killed and was captured today in a rooming house. Verle McElroy of Iowa City died suddenly at home from a heart attack aged young man. He previously lived in Crawfordsville after high school graduation in 1924. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 PM Thursday at United Presbyterian Church in Crawfordsville, with burial there. He is survived by his mother Ruth McElroy and grandmother Mrs John Maxwell. his father had died years earlier. Funeral arrangements are by L A Jones funeral home of Washington.

Tenants Become Owners of Farms in Fairfield County
Twenty four Washington county farmers mostly tenants and young men have become farm owners through the National Farm Loan associations at Fairfield since the Farm Credit act of 1935. O C Pettit reports the association advanced over 195000 in long term loans and other credit to help tenants and others buy land. Down payments were acceptable and financing covered up to 75 percent of the balance with Federal Land Bank and commissioner loans. Many buyers purchased farms they had been operating while some obtained credit purchases from the land bank. The Farm Credit act broadened home ownership by enabling second mortgage loans as well as first mortgage loans.
