A United Press survey from 27 states and 12 cities shows a rise in automobile deaths in 1931 despite a forecast drop in registrations. Total deaths for the year are estimated near 24,000, up about 2.35 percent from 1930, with Montana Missouri and California showing notable increases.
Walter Smith and H F Timmins tied for first in Crone's Market guessing contest weighing beef at 716 pounds. Both win 10 pounds roast. Don Mitchell next with 5 pounds. Omer Te Bockhorst and James Redd tied for third, 5 pounds each. Whittaker wins 2 pounds steak, others share additional prizes. nearly a thousand guesses made.
Winners of the Rothschild store anniversary sale contest were drawn Saturday evening. First prize of ten dollars in merchandise went to Mrs. Jack Reid, second prize to Mrs. J. Pease for five dollars, third prize to Mrs. F Diller for three dollars, and fourth prize to Mrs. J A Tones for two dollars. Five one-dollar merchandise prizes went to Mrs. E W Schultz, Helen Brown, Cathryone Caldwell, Emma Randolph of Keota, and Edna Purvis.
Dr Charles R. Brown dean emeritus of Yale Divinity School will be the speaker at the Sunday evening club tomorrow. His address will be broadcast from station M A Q. Brown is a recurring Christmas season speaker at this club each year.
The January term of the district court will handle 623 new cases plus old matters. Among filings are 28 foreclosures and 18 notes suits, three new divorces, two criminal cases from Keokuk county, and a will contest against the Lemley estate alleging lack of testamentary capacity and undue influence. Auto accident suits seek damages ranging from 3,989 to 5,000 dollars with plaintiffs represented by Baldrige Bailey and others.
Two churches on East Second street hold special services tomorrow drawing large crowds. Trinity Lutheran dedicates its remodeled building with morning afternoon and evening services and out of town ministers. Baptist church marks its 90th anniversary with all day observances including a history reading and address by former pastor Rev. John D. Kern. Parking along East Second Street and North Second Avenue expected to be scarce due to out of town visitors. Miss Lucy Benz visiting from Oskaloosa for Christmas vacation. Trial notices list 39 cases for January term including probate and civil actions such as Cummings vs Swift and Washington Loan & Trust Co vs Savage.

Information from a convict reveals a plan to use a two seat glider built in the shoe factory to escape Leavenworth Federal Penitentiary. The craft with a 14 foot wing span was seized and destroyed before December 11 as guards thwarted the attempt.

Des Moines December 26. Automobile owners who do not obtain drivers licenses before January 1 must have their 1932 license plates to obtain the license free, according to W A Kievens superintendent of the state drivers license department. Otherwise a fee of 25 cents will be charged.

A wide range of fatal incidents during Christmas and nearby days shows automobile crashes dominating the death toll across the United States. Fireworks deaths occur in Natchez Mississippi New Orleans and North Carolina with several other fatalities linked to falls and accidental shootings.
At Charlotte North Carolina nine people died when a sedan carrying a Paw Creek family and others was struck by a passenger train. Police speculated crowding may have hindered the driver in spotting or stopping for the crossing. The victims included John Love the driver Dorie Cox Raymond Sharp Mr and Mrs K A Holden and two children William 5 and Maxine 2 Cauthen Holden and Lora Cox.
