Washington dispatch says Governor Leslie M. Shaw of Iowa will become secretary of the treasury to succeed Lyman J. Gage. Secretary Wilson of Iowa remains at agriculture. Dolliver and other Iowans praise Shaw for finance expertise and banking experience.
Governor Shaw, in Des Moines, says the president asked him by wire if he would accept the treasury secretary role. He would accept if tendered, though no formal offer has been made. Based on Washington dispatches he assumes the appointment is settled, with his Iowa term ending Jan. 16 once Cummins takes office.
An ad extols Dr Pierce’s Favorite Prescription as a remedy for female health issues. It claims to restore vigor, cure dis ease of the delicate organs, and improve overall vitality with testimonials. The notice also offers a free Common Sense Medical Adviser by mail upon request.
W C Pollard of Farrer City and H Pollock of St Louis are bound over to the grand jury for swindling. More than fifty women testified as they and a man named Quigley canvassed for an alleged magazine offering big prizes. Quigley took the money and fled without delivering prizes.
Dewitt Clinton House aged 74 died in Kansas City Missouri after a long career as a famed traveling man. Born in Vermont he founded Illinois first steam bakery in Peoria. He served in the Sixth Minnesota during the Civil War and endured a four day siege by Sioux at Birch Cooley with many casualties before relief arrived.
Five paper mills and strawboard works in Muncie and surrounding towns will merge into a Buffalo based corporation within two weeks. The transfer follows acceptance by company officials and signals widening consolidation with nearby industries to join the national trust. In Richmond the Richmond Shovel and Tool company, a major shovel maker, was absorbed by the same national body with Charles H. Myers and William J. Alfred among officers of the local trust and Samuel S. Early as secretary and treasurer.

Millevoye urged restraint and cited English papers about the French army. Windsor Ontario magistrate Magistrae-Jay ruled that John N Watts may be extradited to the United States authorities. He is charged by his divorced wife with abducting their child Kathleen Watts from Springfield Illinois.
James A. Todd, manager of Towle Manufacturing Silversmiths in Chicago, was found dead in the store lavatory after locking himself in following a confrontation through the lavatory keyhole. Worry and overwork are cited as factors.
Chase Broaddus, a colored man from St. Joseph Missouri, was fatally wounded when an officer shot him in the back of the head as he resisted arrest and knocked the officer down. The incident occurred in Leavenworth on December 26.
