Fighting Parson Axtell Bound Fight With Landlord in Royal Oak

Rev. J. J. Axtell alleges a confrontation with landlord W. G. Mohen over a sidewalk led to a clash on the steps. Mohen admits threatening with a bare scantling but says the minister was the aggressor. Axtell’s hand was fractured and his congregation supports him in the law and order crusade.

School board session on manual training needs funding

Fond du Lac Wisconsin reports Superintendent Harvey urged restoration of the manual training program funding as the state provides yearly increases while the district cuts expenses. Harvey warned the drawing and teaching must return to avoid cutting the regular allowance and the program continues to decline. Indianapolis Literary Society shocks Governor Mount by blackballing him then admitting him without his knowledge. Mount rejects the act. Thirty killed and wounded at Tugela river battle

At Pretoria a report details the Tugela river engagement with thirty British killed or wounded. General Bulwer’s relief column attacked, Boers held strong positions as artillery exchanged fire and British forces fell back. Eleven ambulances removed the dead and wounded, and a twenty four hours armistice was granted.

Two Chicago men arrested for bold hold ups over Christmas

Police say John Templeton and Frank Cooney planned Christmas presents to victims by forcing cash and pocketbooks on Sunday night. Victims Henry Meeker and John Heapy identified the pair at West Chicago Avenue station, with Meeker noting the suspects as the robbers.

Death of Man At Miller Brewery Shellac Work

Charles Barth aged 36 of 461 Thirty-first Street died at home after a day of shellac work inside beer vats at Miller brewery in Milwaukee. Coroner Van Lare planned an inquest. post mortem by Drs Sifton and Washburn found death from carbon monoxide poisoning. He fell ill after morning shifts and died early today.

Pope Orders Dispensations for Mixed Marriages from Rome

In the closing year of the nineteenth century the pope decreed that all dispensations for mixed marriages must be obtained from Rome. The Lawton fund is now estimated at 30 000 dollars and will be raised to 50 000 dollars. Heavy rains and snows plus chinook winds have caused a vast flood of water in western Washington rivers and related damage. Applications for war pensions total 25 000. Washington officials are pleased with the situation in the Philippines. Hastings Minnesota suffered a blaze in which nearly three blocks of downtown buildings burned for about 200 000 dollars. Peter J Holbert an electrician in Jacksonville Florida shot his wife and then killed himself Mrs Holbert will recover. San Jacinto Suffered Major Earthquake Damage

A strong 4:25 am quake centered near San Jacinto Riverside county caused 12 seconds of shaking across southern California. Ten to fifteen buildings in San Jacinto and Hermit damaged. total damage estimated at 50 000 dollars. Los Angeles Santa Ana and San Diego reported shocks with minimal damage.

Christmas Tragedy Shrouds Brazwell Mine Disaster

Wreck Toll From California Train Crash

A broken wheel on the engine of the Los Angeles to Pomona train caused a wreck near Pomona. Three people died and about twenty one were injured, including engine crew PD Johnson who was unconscious. The fireman Mikey Monroe and Maural Thurman perished. Others suffered cuts or bruises as the coach burned briefly then was extinguished.
