Washington city council faces organized opposition to a beer license request for 120 East Washington Street. The Washington Ministerial Association led by Rev. T. C. Polk gathered petitions and plans to present them at the next council meeting. Mayor G. E. Mace says council will act only after census figures arrive and in accordance with Iowa law. Stanley Micone, the applicant, says the issue should be settled by law.
Junior Chamber officials announced the winners of the Jaycee sponsored home decorations contest. Robert Roe won first prize of 25 dollars at 733 South Third Street. Robert Day earned 15 dollars at 165 South Iowa. Nels Wes termark received 10 dollars at 909 South Third Street. Four judges presided Friday night.
Three Wash ington Junior Chamber of Commerce members Phil Kneen Russ Miller and Don McClure received outstanding achievement awards at the Jaycee Christmas ball in Legion rooms last night Dale Booth received a past president's pin About 150 attended Charles Morgan chaired the event and several ladies were honored for hall decorating Don McClure announced the next junior chamber meeting set for January 8.
Four marriage licenses were issued this week at the courthouse. Lawrence R. Brown of Wellman wed Naomi EK. Dautremont of Riverside, Tel fers John Simons wed Betty Jean Tait of Washington, and Stephen K. Wiggers wed Ruth Isabel Foster of Washington. A fifth license went to Rollin H. Cole and Martha J. Hickey, both of Washington.
Reports state four additional Chinese armies are advancing to enter the Korean conflict, expanding Communist forces engaged in the fighting. The movement is part of ongoing large scale hostilities and signals potential escalation in the region.
Four more Chinese Red armies reportedly moved south from Manchuria to join the imminent Red offensive against Seoul and the United Nations. Total allied and Communist forces in the front near the 38th parallel reach about 540,000 with 39 Chinese divisions and 18 North Korean divisions.
Clinton C Curtis Jones age 67 of 1008 East Main street died at 2 am after a brief illness. He was born Sept 11 1883 in Cass County Iowa and was a long time Rock Island railroad engine watchman retiring three years ago. Surviving are a daughter Mrs Melvin Newton Des Moines a son Triv A Jones Washington six grandchildren one great grandchild and three sisters Mrs Eva Stegner Spokane Mrs Ana Millar Des Moines and Mrs Hazel Moore Washington. Funeral services set for 2 pm Tuesday December 26 at Sherman's funeral home with burial in New Haven cemetery. Masonic Blue Lodge members will conduct the graveside rite meeting at 1:15 pm at the temple. Continuous details note his memberships in Washington Lodge 26 AF&AM Cyrus Chapter 13 Zarabetha Council 2 Bethlehem Commandery 45 and Kaaba Shrine Temple.
New courses include children's literature nature study and world geography offered next semester at Washington junior college. Courses open to individuals with less than 60 semester hours and count toward standard elementary certificate renewal. Interested persons should contact junior college officials here.
Funeral services for Mrs Ward S Shalla were held Thursday afternoon at the Jones funeral home with Rev L E Jones in charge. Pallbearers included Frederick Heck Lloyd Sharp Fred Shalla Jal Shalla Alva Wills Leo Sharp and Bermond cemetery was the burial site.

United Press reports 119 deaths from Friday 6 p m to dawn today with 95 traffic fatalities and 18 from fire or explosion. Chicago and New York police note high accident rates as millions travel for Christmas. The National Safety Council warns 440 more deaths expected over the holiday weekend.
Secretary of State Dean Acheson warned that isolationism would threaten U S security after returning from the Brussels NATO defense meet. He urged continued European aid to prevent a Russian takeover and drew sharp lines with Hoover era tactics as Congress splits over funding. General Collins backed Acheson, warning of potential Western Europe collapse if aid ends. The Senate debate signals a high stakes vote next year on European assistance and defense.
President Truman spends Christmas at his Missouri home greeting friends and holding brief talks. He wired condolences to the Walker widow, discussed Ridgway’s Korea appointment, attended a hotel luncheon, and planned to attend an Eastern Star ceremony in Grandview with his sister Mary Jane Truman in attendance.

Brighton resident A. E. Buttery, 73, died Thursday night after a stroke Saturday evening. Funeral services are set for Sunday at 2 o'clock at the Omar Hoskins funeral home.
A full house gathered this morning as the State theater offered its annual free film for local children. The program of cartoons and comedies was described as a big success and the management thanked the children for their good conduct during the showing.
Prairie Flower church will present its Christmas program, including a cantata, Sunday evening at 7:30 o clock instead of the worship service as previously announced.
John R. Horak 57 lifelong Riverside area resident died at his home after a lingering illness. Born January 15 1893 on the family farm, funeral at Trinity Methodist Church December 24 led by Rev L E Jones. Burial in Riverside Cemetery. Survivors include wife Anna two sons Dale and Wayne a daughter Delbert Grecian two grandchildren a brother Charles and sister Mrs Albert Navy.
