Fire at Chicago stockyards claims thirty firefighters

A large fire at Nelson Morris & Co. packing plant in the Union stockyards Chicago killed thirty firemen and five stockyards workers. Fire Marshal James Horan and other officers were among the dead as ammonia explosions and collapsing walls trapped rescuers. Mayor Busse and city officials immediate relief plans and investigations into water pressure failures.

Ten Firemen Die In Philadelphia Factory Blaze

Thirteen firemen and one policeman perished as the Friedlander Leather factory on North Bodine Street collapsed after a blaze. Fireman William Glazier was rescued after fourteen hours trapped. officials say he may live. The fire caused $25,000 damage to a fifty year old five story brick building. Mayor Reyburn ordered relief measures for the families of the dead and injured.

Chinese Leper Is Set Free In Passaic

Mark Lee a Chinese leper at the tuberculosis hospital is to be released by the Passaic board of health and may return to his laundry business. City sanitarian Elliott says leprosy is not communicable in this climate and not as bad as feared.

Non union men routed in Indiana strike clash

In Stinesville Indiana striking American workers attacked a house housing fifteen Sicilians firing through windows and scaring the occupants away. The foremen fled the scene and the strike persists with some large stone quarries remaining idle as workers refuse to return.

Plant Goes Up in Flames at Washington Canning Co

Fire destroyed the Washington Canning company's plant in Washington Indiana causing an estimated loss of nearly 1590 dollars. Owners Oliver M. Vance H Trunelove Thomas M. Nugent and Philander Me Henry were away from the city and insurance coverage is unknown though believed adequate. The blaze was discovered by a watchman from a neighboring factory and the entire local fire force could not prevent the total destruction as the plant had just begun packing pork and beans after a successful season.
