War Department letter dated December 2 to Miles from Root relays the president’s conclusions on military public statements. It denounces Miles for overstepping official propriety and reiterates that officers must speak only when summoned by superiors or in official reports.
An advertisement touts Dr. Pierce's Favorite Prescription as restoring womanly health before exercise builds strength. It cites claims of stopping drains, healing inflammation and ulcers, and curing female weakness with testimonials from Mrs. George A. Strong of Gansevoort, NY, noting improvement after multiple products.
A long standing army regulation requires officers to set examples and maintain discipline. A Navy department controversy prompted a court of inquiry verdict, and the lieutenant general criticized the majority in a public letter. The postscript notes that further explanations do not alter the case.

Pittsburg records three fatal disasters in three days with a latest blast at Sanger Minick Co. steel plant. Four workers died including William Reed Ford B Reed aged 17 John P Brown and Alvin K Pershing. At least twenty injured from escaping steam in the mill.
The Pere Marquette car ferry No. 16 hit a submerged bar during a midnight gale, killing coal passer Mike Taft of Chicago and injuring two others severely. Thirty three crew members were rescued by breeches buoy as ice formed on deck. the vessel is likely a total loss.
Reports say Argentina has pulled its minister from Santiago and left negotiations to the legation secretary. Peace is hoped, but Argentine public sentiment runs high with war enthusiasm and crowds at rifle ranges.
In Mattoon Illinois on December 25 a six year old girl, Gladys Wright, the daughter of Joseph Wright a stock raiser near Paris, climbed a bureau, opened a box she believed contained candy, and swallowed six strychnine tablets. She died two hours later from convulsions.
The Doyle Burns case in Conneil Bluffs Iowa ended with a jury awarding plaintiff James Doyle $446,922.73 after a trial over stock and dividends from the Portland Mining Company. Burns' lawyers immediately moved for a new trial.
Charley Budd of Des Moines Iowa won the Hazard cup and emblem at Blue River park in Kansas City Missouri by defeating Frank Parmalee of Omaha in a shoot-off. Their tie on Friday produced straight scores of twenty five birds each with Budd shooting first. Parmalee's fourth bird dropped dead outside bounds.
Constantinople reports W. W. Peet treasurer of the Turkish mission and M. Garguilo cragoman of the U S legation work in Salonika to open talks with brigands holding Miss Ellen M Stone captive.

Genesee county man QO A Sehula, a Richfield township farmer, left home ten years ago seeking fortune in Tacoma and Alaska. He became a prominent Dawson City claim owner, with mine profits of about $100,000. He returns home briefly, plans to stay two more years, sell his property, and live in Flint in luxury with his parents, wearing a nugget valued at 28 dollars.
Massachusetts Senator Hoar at the New England Society dinner in Brooklyn references a wireless telegraphy lineage from Marathon and Thermopylae to the Mayflower and to the American Revolution. He suggests current receivers are scarce and notes Aguinaldo may have caught a hint of the message.
In Lawton Oklahoma Territory on December 24, John Roberts shot and killed George Higginbottom and his brother John Higginbottom, and wounded their father G N Higginbottom, after a dispute over hay division. Roberts killed George and the elder Higginbottom with shots from behind as they attempted to defend the father. He then rode away after bidding his wife goodbye.
Edith Collins, a young woman with a police record, leaped from a second story window at a Detroit rooming house to avoid arrest after being accused by her male companion of robbing him. She struck the stone sidewalk, suffering a fractured skull and possible death. Police found a large roll of bills on her.
In Parsons Kansas inquest finds Colonel John K. Bull and his wife died from natural gas asphyxiation. No violence marks on bodies detected, ending mystery surrounding their deaths.
J San Bloom an 88 year old farmer living a mile south of Oakland Nebraska was found lying unconscious in a hog yard as hogs fed on his still warm body. He collapsed in the yard likely due to the freezing weather while feeding with his son discovering him.
The old whaler Progress abandoned since the World’s fair in Calumet river is to be blown up with dynamite to clear boat traffic. Only a shell remains as relic hunters begin to deconstruct the vessel.
Guthrie Oklahoma Territory December 23 James Wilson a farmer ten miles west of town was arrested Saturday on a Missouri governor's requisition for the murder of Orville Lyons at Arno Douglass County Missouri thirty two years ago.
Detroit December 23 report that General R A Alger underwent gall stone removal surgery yesterday after long illness. Surgeons say he withstood the operation well though his condition remains serious and he is under careful observation.
Surgeons stated the infected gall bladder with gall stones required drainage after adhesions. General Alger's condition remains serious but he tolerated the operation. The procedure involved Drs. C. G. Jennings H. H. Longyear H. O. Walker and B. L. Shortey of this city Dr. William Oster of Baltimore and Dr. J. B. Murphy of Chicago.
Danville laborer David Long entered the Second National Bank with a dinner pail and deposited nearly 1500 dollars in old war issue notes worth 100 cents each. Bank officials found the notes were damp and damaged, some sent to Washington for exchange, while Long, about 70, offered no explanation of the money s origin. Feathers and straw were embedded in some bills, suggesting prior concealment in a bed.
Harry Cromwell a top county teacher is missing and believed murdered after leaving his Perth district school payment. He was last seen near a mining town woods and two strangers seen on the highway are suspected. his body reportedly tossed into an abandoned mine. His brother Henry Cromwell in the Internal Revenue Service joins friends in searching for him.
In Havana on December 22 supporters of General Mase withdrew all party candidates from the December 31 elections after Governor General Wood refused representation on the unity board. The move cites lack of genuine will for fair voting and notes possible unrest among rural black voters. La Lacha calls the withdrawal a betrayal and the election a possible fraud.
In Mount Clemens Michigan Homer Bliss a young farmer from Mackomb county was found guilty of murder in the second degree by a jury after being charged with killing his father last June. Also reported were arrivals aboard the steamer Philadelphia from Southampton including John Philip Sousa and family, and Charles F Wennerker declining the St Louis customs post due to business duties.
A Vienna dispatch reports at the Vienna Jockey Club on Saturday Count Potoceki lost £100,000 after three hours of card playing. Count Pal Lavincini won most of the money.
The Blue Front hotel in Fowlerton Indiana burned to the ground total loss. Owner listed as EL A Herman of Munele. Most furnishings were saved. Also reports Berlin Express freight collision near Neunbeken with twenty injuries and six confirmed dead with more feared buried.
Jerry O'Donald of Cleveland died in Lorain city prison after attempting to put out a fire on his clothing with a pipe. His charred remains were discovered after the incident.
Henry C. Krause of 50 Rogers Street, driven insane by a nightmare, strangled his elderly mother in her bed. He told police he fought a wild beast in fear and recalled the brutal wound and bloodied mouth as he confessed at the Central police station.
In Sioux City Mississippi, Eimma Stilwell, 26, labored under insanity from religious excitement and burned herself. She loosened her dress neckband, poured kerosene on her clothes, and set fire to the liquid with a match, dying from the self inflicted blaze. Mayor Harrison to Speak at Omaha
A Northwestern road freight wreck between Suamico and Oconto yesterday killed two people and fatally injured another. Many cars burned, cremating the bodies of the dead in Green Bay, Wisconsin.
