The Washington Community Schools extend the first semester to Friday January 20, 1978 to balance instructional days due to winter weather. Staff registration moves to January 23 with no classes for students that day. Second semester starts January 24, and the May graduation may be rescheduled. Final day of classes for second term now June 2 with teacher workshop days June 5-6.
Reports from the Public Safety Center cite several minor accidents amid fresh snow and ice. Kevin Myers damaged a Derby Station fuel post. David Cousins slid into a ditch near Wellman Country Club. Judy Brock struck a speed sign on East Washington. Larry Manning rear ended a pickup. A snow fort on North Avenue C was cleared by officers and traffic soon resumed.
Washington County 4 H Council plans an officer training session for newly elected club officers. The event on December 27 at the Christian Church in Washington runs 9 to 11 30 a m with parliamentary procedures stressed and a FFA demonstration.
Washington post office and all government agencies will close Monday December 26 for Christmas. The Evening Journal will not publish that day and mail deliveries halt from 4:45 p.m. Saturday until Wednesday morning. Lobby closure and no mail activity apply nationwide for the holiday. Several retailers plan to open the day after Christmas while some remain closed.

United Press International reports Iowa will stay mostly cloudy and mild on Friday with night lows from the 20s to near 30 and daytime highs in the mid 30s to around 40.
Six Americans including Ann Whitaker a NASA physicist from Huntsville and four Europeans were named as payload specialists for the first Spacelab on the space shuttle mission in December 1980. The seven day flight will carry two scientists in the Spacelab and three American astronauts, with the European and American finalists to join a European Space Agency platform for experiments.
Washington United Press International reports a House Senate conference panel deadlocked on natural gas price controls. Senate conferees voted 16-2 against the compromise, adjourned for the year, and left open a potential return if talks resume. Sen. J Bennett Johnston labeled the plan a turkey and urged a fresh approach.
Gene James, 41, of Burlington, faces an assault with intent to commit murder charge after a shooting near Oasis Motel in rural Burlington. Injured were Gordon Beach, 35, hospitalized in Iowa City, and Ronald Porter, 20, treated and released. James remained hospitalized with bond set at 25,000. a court date was not set due to injuries.
A Mississippi River grain elevator exploded trapping workers among burning silos. Ten people were hospitalized including a sheriff's deputy, with officials fearing up to twenty more dead. Witnesses described a mushroom cloud as debris flew hundreds of feet and grain dust drifted over New Orleans.
Gordon Yutzy a 17 year old Wayland Iowa leader of the Waco High School Chicken Catching Squad earned nearly 500 this year. He says the profits will pay Christmas gifts and start college savings. He describes catching capons and hens at night to keep grades up and notes his plan to study engineering at Iowa State University after leaving the poultry business.
