Measles defeated Santa Claus in a Friday night fixture at the Iowa School for the Blind, prompting a Christmas quarantine for 211 students and faculty. The entire student and staff body will spend the holiday season in isolation due to the outbreak.
Four high school students from prominent families were killed when their car was struck by a Pennsylvania train at a crossing in Cannonsburg. Fern Harris 16 Jean Marshall 16 Kenneth Culp 18 William Kee 17 were in the car. Kee's father was Continental Oil superintendent. The youths had attended a school dance and were dragged about 200 yards.
Members of the Jasper County Farm Bureau adopted a resolution to urge the Commodity Credit Corporation to declare due all sealed corn loans, with owners paid five cents a bushel. They argued high feed prices force farmers to sell livestock.
Des Moines reports November emergency relief cases total 56 765 with Polk County having the most at 8 599 cases and Sac County the smallest at 71. total relief expenditures not yet compiled.

Dean C. C. Williams of the University of Iowa asserts ninety percent of highway damage is caused by heavy trucks and buses. He says these vehicles add about 25 percent to construction costs requiring wider and thicker pavements stronger bridges lower grades and greater clearance under crossings and subways.
District engineers deny rumors that the Davenport government dam will give way under an ice gorge. They say the hazard is unfounded and residents of Fishertown were not warned to evacuate. The rumor is described as ignorant and wholly in error.
Orville Thompson, 28, of Webster City died Friday afternoon after slipping while running from a falling tree. The tree crushed his back and he succumbed to injuries shortly after.
The State University of Iowa is projected to show an operating profit of 160 285 for the 1934 85 academic year by the United States Bureau of Education. The prediction is based on a report compiled by Henry Hadger assistant statistician in the office of education.

Two national banks in Okemah were robbed simultaneously as doors opened. The gang split into two groups to loot the First National and the Okemah National, taking $7,000 and $12,000 respectively before fleeing.

The Goodfellows committee of the Y's Men’s club reports donations toward Christmas dinner baskets for needy families. The H and A Baking Company and Colonial Bakeries provided bread, with 200 loaves donated. De Wit grocery pledged groceries for Monday as volunteers continue to supply essentials.
The county council of religious education sponsors a five week program on Monday evenings from Jan 28 to Feb 25, 7 to 9 pm. Leigh W. Soule chairs the board with Vernon Witting as secretary and Neill Trotman as treasurer. Members include Supt J H Peet Carl Johnson and Rev A A Vinz. Rev Wing will be dean. Four courses planned, two on primary work and Bible, two to be announced.

The Washington County Farmers Mutual Insurance fire truck aided by local firemen kept the M. & St. L. bridge over the Skunk river from destruction as Burlington bridge burned during a crew’s creosote pile torch. A bucket brigade supplied water while the pumper operated for nearly four hours to save the M. & St. L. bridge and spare the nearby Burlington crossing.
