Washington four wards tally drags as recount continues

Absentee ballots remain to be counted while the recount board resumes checking the county supervisor race. Eighteen precincts have been recounted with results shifting in most districts though no major changes evident. Patterson 2232, Richards 2293, Schneider 2572 in those precincts. Riverside Santa Claus event set for December 24 at 2 p.m. at the Riverside Community building with treats for children. chamber volunteers to help sack the candy Friday at 7 p.m.

Morrell to cut about 900 workers by January

John Morrell and Co officials said the plant will reduce its staff by about 900 by January to align with marketing changes. The total includes 800 union workers and around 100 office staff, leaving roughly 1,000 on the payroll as the company shifts to carload and truckload distribution to boost profitability.

Ray pledges effort for realistic Iowa budget

Gov. Robert D Ray says he will assemble a sound 1973 75 budget by analyzing 90 percent funding plans and higher requests, prioritizing education and elderly aid while trimming nonessential programs to meet fiscal needs and keep local welfare and school aid funded. The plan aims for realism without harming major problems.

Trial of Sheriff Lee continues with defense witnesses

Keosauqua district court hears defense testimony as Sheriff Orville Lee faces embezzlement charges over two Van Buren County guns. Joyous Houston welcome for Apollo 17 astronauts home

Nine die as DC9 hits Convair at O'Hare in fog

A North Central DC9 taking off in near zero visibility struck the tail of a Delta Convair 880 at O'Hare. Nine of 45 aboard the DC9 died. at least 15 injured. Delta carried 93 on board. FAA and investigators from Washington arrived to determine cause amid fog and conflicting taxi instructions.
