The USS Long Beach radar tracked two slow moving aircraft off Than Hoa near Hanoi. FB Phantom interceptors from USS Kitty Hawk engaged, radar showed the blips disappear, officials say the intruders were likely shot down. Ground fighting persisted near the DMZ as Marines repelled two machinegun assaults.
Washington VFW post backs the Crane Co factory plan by endorsing the industrial revenue bond election. Commander Richard Davidson said the proposal was discussed at a recent meeting and the group voted unanimously yes. The election is set for December 28.
American Buel Ray Wortham and companion Craddock Gilmour were sentenced in a Leningrad city court to concurrent three year terms for stealing a bear statue and selling dollars for rubles. Wortham faced three years for the statue and up to eight for currency deals. Gilmour was fined. Both 1965 ex paratroopers toured Russia by car and were arrested Oct 1 before crossing into Finland. The case notes seizure of their car and belongings with an appeal deadline in one week.
A Cedar Rapids painting contractor Richard Lawrence 37 turned himself in after a fatal shooting of Conrad Kaiser 49 at a Marion building site Tuesday Kaiser was hit by three bullets and died at the scene Law rence is held in Linn County jail on a 25000 bond Authorities said the motive may have stemmed from domestic troubles Copper Construction Co was at the site when the shooting occurred and a man was seen fleeing afterwards
President Johnson invites critical Democratic governors to his Texas ranch amid election losses. Iowa's Harold E. Hughes and Missouri's Warren E. Hearnes indicated they would attend, with Texas Governor John Connally also planned to join. Hearnes warned of a possible 1968 candidate shift if Johnson does not adjust his views.
Boone Iowa born Verne Allen Lyon, 23, was arrested on federal charges of placing a dynamite bomb at Lambert-St. Louis air terminal after a porter found the device under a seat and authorities recovered seven sticks of dynamite and eight blasting components in Lyon’s Overland Missouri boarding house. The bomb exploded Saturday night shattering five plate glass windows but caused no injuries. Lyon denied involvement, saying he bought dynamite the morning of the attack. A preliminary hearing is set for December 28 with bond at 15000.
Dr Ariana Frederick Christ-Jan er, 44, elected sixth president of Boston University by the board of trustees. He will assume office July 1 1967, replacing Dr Harold Case who serves as president since 1951. Christ-Janer is a 1943 Carleton College graduate and former Army Air Corps bomber pilot with over 15 Pacific missions. He holds a divinity degree from Yale and a JD from Chicago Law School. He led Cornell College as president starting in 1961.
Grand jurors for the 1967 term have been named at the court house and will report for duty at 10 a.m. on January 10. The panel includes Fred R. Andersen, Hilda Edwards, Lloyd Fisher, Leland Griggs, Velma Havel, Harold Johnson, Robert Miksch, Duane Miller, Milburne McKay, Earl Rae, Keith Stewart, and Mary Whisler from various wards and townships.
Washington County led a list of projects in Iowas five-year construction program for 1967. Key items include paving and widening on Highways 92 1 22 and 218 near Washington and Brighton plus relocation and signal installations at West Chester.
