Fire Levels Building at Ft Madison Fire and gas explosion devastate downtown building
A gas furnace explosion started a six hour fire that left the Marsh building a shell at Fort Madison's main street. Fifteen families were left homeless as the Red Cross offered temporary shelter. Two servicemen William Carr and Henry Weiler escaped and were treated for non serious injuries. Fire crews from the Iowa Ordnance Plant helped contain the blaze and prevent spread to nearby structures.

Plane Wreckage Found On Philippine Peak
The U S air force C 54 transport missing since Tuesday with 37 aboard was located 8000 feet up Mt Tabayog near Baguio Luzon. The pilot sighted the wreckage from the air but saw no movement. A ground rescue squad was ordered to the scene. The aircraft was en route from Okinawa to Clark Field Manila and crashed on a ledge of Mt Tabayog 28 miles northeast of Baguio, making parachute or helicopter rescue impractical.
