Iver A. Opstad, superintendent of schools, reports ten typewriters were stolen from the Iowa City high school between Saturday and Tuesday afternoon. Police are investigating the burglary at the city school.
Burlington collector Mark Sturgeon unveiled a 1652 oak tree sixpence said to be among America's rarest coins. Sturgeon received the piece from a former banker years ago and recently had it appraised. the coin is described as being in excellent condition.
Cedar Rapids report of George Pohorsky state conservation commission employee escaping as his automobile broke through thin ice at Sheftie s boat house on the Cedar River. He opened the door and swam to safety while workers salvaged the sinking car in about ten feet of water.
Howard Mieras 18, son of Charles Mieras of Maurice, remains in a local hospital after a dynamited tree fragment struck his forehead. He stood about 50 feet from the tree when the blast occurred, the fragment crushing his skull and prompting brain surgery.
A $125,000 dividend will be shared by 3,000 depositors of American Trust and Savings Bank in Cedar Rapids. The payment is the third 20 percent installment on depositor claims, authorized after the court allowed a $40,000 bank loan to supplement $90,000 cash, ensuring the payout before Christmas.
Iowa City The State University of Iowa preschool laboratory units were called a hazard to children by George D. Stoddard dean of the graduate school and director of the child welfare station. He said the frame houses, former homes converted for child welfare research, should be replaced by a new building as part of a five point program for next year.
Ottumwa Chamber of Commerce directors urged dropping the proposed 1.17 million dollar sewage disposal plant citing higher living costs. Two commissioners approved a 527 thousand dollar WPA grant. Mayor Hill criticized the plan which would allegedly not benefit Ottumwa or downstream communities on the Des Moines River.
Coroner L O Riggert reports Leonard Wood 19 shot his girlfriend Marie Horstman 18 as she decorated a Christmas tree at her home and then killed himself. The girl sustains a neck flesh wound not expected to be serious.
Covenant lodge No. 101 I O F met in regular session with forty two members and two visitors present. Several membership applications were read and a social program for Odd Fellows and Rebekahs is set for Thursday evening December 29 led by general chairman Howard Lins.
An hour after surrendering in St Louis on a federal warrant accusing him of false ledger entries Mayor Norville W Brickley of Festus Missouri faces new embezzlement charges amounting to $12000 from the Festus school district treasury. Brickley who once led the Festus bank held the bank presidency.

Street Commissioner Blaine Holmes announced cinders will surface the temporary detour to Elm Grove cemetery as a new cemetery road is built. The route runs west on Harrison Street then south on Avenue E to the cemetery.
In Savannah a brutal mass murder left five white victims dead in shacks outside the city, the Tillman family of four plus Tom Chester the night watchman. J S Tillman 33 WPA worker Elizabeth Tillman Pearl 9 Viola 38 and Chester were found beaten and shot with a bloodstained iron pipe as the key clue.
Postmaster M C Delong clarified that December 26 will be observed as a holiday with no regular mail deliveries. Belated gift parcels and special delivery mail will be handled, while outcome mail proceeds as on holidays and Sundays. Yesterday saw 156000 letters and cards processed.

Mrs. George Dietrich, married 17 years, discovers her husband is actually George Musica, brother of Philip Musica alias F. Donald Coster, former head of an $87 million drug firm now under scrutiny. Dietrich held on $100,000 bail as investigators probe the company's financial structure. the Dietrichs reside in Fairfield Connecticut.
Des Moines reports 48 Iowa highway fatalities in December as Phil Sproul of the State Safety Council urges caution during Christmas travel. He asks parents to set an example, avoid New Year’s Eve drunken driving, and ensure students return rides with sober, responsible drivers.
A morning blaze at the Huntsberger property in Wellman damaged a coal shed and one end of the barn. The Miller family occupies the home on the parcel. Cause unknown and no coal was present in the shed.
County Attorney Harvey Carter says charges will be sworn on Leo Mikesh of Ackley for the Clarksville State Bank branch robbery near Kelsey. Mikesh was arrested at home after Sheriff Frank Neal and a state agent questioned him. The holdup occurred Tuesday afternoon when the clerk Miss Tillie Johnson faced the robber and cash was demanded. The clue came from the robber's car, which led to Mikesh.
Santa Claus will return to Washington this evening, phoning Secretary Schmitt at the Chamber of Commerce to announce plans. He aims to be on the square around seven, greet friends and visit stores until 8 30, then attend the Baptist church and visit the county hospital. He will also visit shut in children if transportation is provided before 8 30.

The state board of parole ordered paroles for 44 prisoners at Fort Madison and the Anamosa reformatory. Paroles take effect in February pending good behavior. Among those released are Lee Barrington serving a 60 year sentence for first degree murder and F. D. Posten with an 80 year term for second degree murder. Other names include Judd Stennett and Vern Epperson with varying sentences and remaining terms.
The Rotary club held its annual gift exchange yesterday with a wide variety of toys donated for distribution to children at the local "Y" Christmas party. No speaking program occurred. A four lectures series on international relations is being planned for winter under Rotary International guidance and Institute of International Understanding auspices. Lecturers include C. C. Booth, Margaret Kaiser, Paul D’Eeca, and John Alexander Morrison.
Chairman Wayne Norman of the Washington County Soil Conservation Organization received a notice from the Commodity Credit Corporation regarding the expiration of the wheat loan period on January 1.
In Des Moines on December 21 Governor Kraschel opened a Town Democrats rally two floors above Fort Des Moines hotel, almost an hour late, with EF. 4. Birmingham absent along with Herring Ginette Harrington Jacobsen. National Chairman Farley telegram read before a crowd of 200 to 300. Kraschel urged unity to keep Town in the Democratic column in 1940.
With two and a half days remaining, donors have given 25.80 amid a total goal of 200 for the month. The Good Fellow committee, aided by the County Welfare Office, has three times as many names as dollars and will pick the neediest families for baskets to be delivered this afternoon. Wheat loan notices state loans are available only to farmers who secure wheat security and apply before January 1, 1929, with no extensions. Applications may be made at the county soil conservation office.
