Fire of undetermined origin raged in a Mason City building Monday night drawing the full Mason City fire department and help from Frampton Ia. firefighters. The blaze disrupted Northwestern Distributing Company operations and required mutual aid response.
Four young men from six states were named Rhodes Scholars in Des Moines. Recipients include Courtney Smith of Iowa City and Edward Weissmiller now at Mount Vernon, with Har ry Flory of Pawnee City Nebraska and Gerald Brown of Chamberlain South Dakota. Keith Knos, an Upper Iowa University freshman, suffered severe burns from a chemical explosion in a campus chemistry lab. He mixed red phosphorus and potassium chlorate in a test tube and carried it in his pocket when it exploded.
DES MOINES reported four new names were added to Iowa's 1987 highway fatality list, bringing the year’s total to 531. The weekly update shows a small rise from 506 a year earlier, while veneer streets and roads were blamed for minor accidents and a restrained fatality pace.
Marshalltown theaters held a Christmas show for children with admission a can of fruit or vegetables. A total of 2200 cans were donated to organizations filling baskets for the needy.

In Waverly Bremer county Iowa Mrs Elias Waters 36 opened fire as children slept killing Eugene 1 and Heverly 2 and wounding Lavonne 5 and Bernard 9 both near death. She then used a shotgun at a neighbor's home before being disarmed at the county institution headquarters.
London reports Premier Neville Chamberlain pressed Commons to demand real consequences from Japan beyond rhetoric as China conflict widens into a major war. Tokyo admits the Panay attack charge linked to Col Hashimoto, tied to a February 1936 Tokyo upheaval and cabinet slayings.
Nearly 60 employees and three state liquor commission members may be named as detectives after theft of 115 cases of liquor at the Des Moines warehouse. Chairman B. E. Manley said an assessment will cover the loss if the thief is not found soon, with all access personnel including commissioners to be liable.

Iowa State College engineer M C Spangler cites eight years of tests showing overloaded trucks crack and ruin pavements increasing maintenance costs. Experiments used concrete slabs imitating roads with precision measurements near expansion joints.
Sheriff Putnam said Roy Furman likely will have parole revoked after three Wellman youths were arrested in Kinross for intoxication. A program of Christmas music by the United Presbyterian choir directed by Miss Carolyn Hamilton will be heard in Central Park Wednesday at 8:15 p.m. The choir will sing at the church with organ accompaniment and the program will be broadcast in the park over Fred Downing’s public address system from the rear stand to the church. Charles George was expected to be the announcer.
