U S 3rd division withdraws along Hungnam waterfront after North Korean forces with Chinese help threaten fresh attacks. Navy armada and Missouri fight back while Gen MacArthur warns 150000 NK troops with 50000 in reserve may strike again toward Seoul.
The east coast and the south endure extreme cold as a cold front reaches Florida. Jacksonville records 23?, Tallahassee 25, Atlanta 19, Nashville 12 with frost in Dixie. New York expected to stay below freezing. NYC set a 23.1 record yesterday.
The Iowa interim committee urged restricting purchases at state liquor stores to two bottles per week per customer and demanded immediate license revocation for sale of the P-60 anti freez e. It cited a lack of cooperation among liquor commissioners and called for swift remedy. It also questioned former comptroller Elmer Drees’s employment status and did not address charges against Gov Beard sley.
Des Moines Iowa agriculture secretary Clyde Spry said he has not yet decided whether to fire Esther Johnson acting state chemist. The comment comes amid questions about her role and duties in the department.
Washington Postmaster Oral J. Brown said the local office is overwhelmed with mail of all types and running about a day behind in deliveries. He cited 235,987 mail cancellations on Monday and noted a heavy parcel post surge. The backlog should be cleared by midnight Saturday with eight men on duty from 6 AM to 10 PM during the Christmas rush.
James Lous, 52, an Iowa City restaurant operator, pleaded not guilty in district court to an open murder charge in the stabbing of a waiter who had been out with his wife.
Fire last night destroyed a barn on the Fred Heck farm near Havre southeast of Washington. Farmers Mutual fire crew fought the blaze but could not save the barn. About 100 tons of hay and straw and 600 bushels of corn plus 400 bushels of oats burned. No livestock were reported lost. Cause traced to a tank heater in a hog waterer. Damage estimated at $8,000, with partial insurance coverage.
Extension service personnel and families from 11 southeast Iowa counties gathered for a luncheon at The Pines to start a meeting. County extension directors and home economists planned a brief business session and a Christmas exchange at the Farm Bureau building.
Lyle R. Box becomes boys associate secretary at the Northern branch YMCA in Highland Park Michigan. He graduates December 16 from George Williams College in Chicago and starts duties January 1. His address is Northern Branch YMCA 12220 Woodward Ave Highland Park Michigan 38.
About 30 Jaycees attended the regular dinner meeting at The Pines. The Jaycee Christmas ball and a decorations contest were discussed. The invitational dance will be at the Legion rooms, City Hall, Friday December 22. Entries for the home decoration contest are due Thursday. entry blanks appear in the Journal. Prizes of 25, 15 and 10 dollars. Winners announced December 23.

Charges of bootlegging were filed today against Joseph Picken owner of The Pines. Warren Dare and Marvin Van Metre filed the information. A preliminary hearing before Justice of the Peace H. M. Putnam is set for 9 o clock tomorrow morning.
Nine year old Raymond Clark sent a pleading letter to Santa on KEFSB prompting volunteers to flood a two room home in northeast Joplin with clothing toys and food. The mother aged 29 faces an impending tumor operation and her husband is absent since last year. The American Legion auxiliary pledged ongoing aid after Christmas.

A crowd of 170 attended the YWCA and Rotary Club turkey dinner and Christmas party in the YMCA community room. Rev T C Polk offered the blessing, E G Humm MCed, and Mrs Sylvia Wilson led the YWCA party. VW representatives included Mrs Paul Shearer and Edna McCarty. Gifts distributed by Glen Mace with help from YWCA members. Mrs T R Phillips played piano for carols.
Mrs Edward S Shalla 73 died at her home nine miles north of Washington after five years of declining health. Funeral services are set for December 21 at 2 PM in Jones funeral home with burial in Richmond cemetery. She was born Frances Edna Yansky October 12 1877 near Ainsworth. She married Edward S Shalla April 22 1903 in Riverside and lived on the same farm throughout married life. Survivors include her husband two daughters Mrs Louis Havee of Ainsworth and Mrs Everett Cox of Kalona four grandchildren a brother James Yansky of Riverside and a sister Mrs Anthony Esch er of Dumont Minnesota.
President Truman announced that General Dwight D. Eisenhower will become Supreme Allied Commander of the European defense forces, with American troops to join the NATO alliance in Europe as soon as ready. Truman said units will be designated to form 5 to 10 ground divisions supported by air power, though exact units and timing were not specified.
Ralph Martin and J. B. Erwin named to a committee to set a date for a joint installation with the Pythian Sisters at the Knights of Pythias meeting last night. Lodge members will take the Pot O Gold to West Chester on December 28, instead of December 21, and the rank of page will be conferred on January 8. No regular meetings will be held on Christmas and New Year’s Day.
Washington high school vocal department presents a Christmas concert at the auditorium tonight at 8. Admission is 60 cents. Directed by Robert B. Ferrell, the program includes mixed chorus, girls glee club, a girls trio, and Audrey Breele solo with selections by noted composers and Christmas carols.
Members of the camera club voted to affiliate with the YMCA and YWCA to gain privileges of YMYW members. Darkroom work will advance with new equipment. city residents interested in photography are invited to join. Next meeting is Monday January 8 at 7 30 PM at the YMCA.
