Mayor W. L. Allan activated a new municipal light plant feature offering low-priced electricity for water heating. Ames residents now access a system first installed locally and among six nationwide.
Sherman Walker, with a crippled hand, faced husking 25 acres of corn. Thirty neighbors gathered at the Walker farm and husked 1 200 bushels in a single day, supplying teams and wagons for the old fashioned husking bee.
Miss Lou Shepherd of Waverly extension staff at Iowa State College and Harry A Green of the University of Iowa devised the Iowa Primary Language Test. The assessment measures pupils knowledge and teaching ability of instructors in elementary schools.
The federal government will release cash and property valued at 61 000 seized during World War I to Celestine Fejervary. Fejervary, a Hungary native and daughter of the late Count Nicholas Fejervary who donated a park to Davenport, benefits from a new law enabling the release.
In Des Moines six moving driverless vehicle incidents occurred in October. Failures to set hand brakes on hills allowed cars to roll and cause damage. Loss of control was the major cause. sixty people were killed and 930 injured in October auto crashes.
Talton Parker, ministerial student from Kansas City and son of local Baptist pastor Rev. J. T. Parker, travels by air to San Francisco to accompany Japanese church leader Kagawa on an American speaking tour after seminary study in Kansas City.
Fire swept the Massena theater causing about $12,000 damage. Theater manager Phil Griffith and his wife marked their twenty third wedding anniversary as flames were brought under control.
Bedford sheriff T V Lacy labels a girl's photo found at a Bishop farm near Bedford as an airtight clue. Sheriff traced a friend of the girl Walter Huntley and arrested him in connection with the chicken theft.
Louise Hall testified that Patrolman F F Lower used the phrase What s the matter with your damn brakes when arresting her for careless driving. Judge J F Mershon found Hall guilty and fined her $10 saying police do not address such words to the public.
George Buckley born February 14, 1880 in Washington died in New York at about 7:30 this morning from a heart ailment. He served as vice president of National City Bank New York and formerly led Crowell Publishing. Burial planned at Em Grove cemetery with services at St Vincent's in New York. Local arrangements by L A Jones funeral home.
The four Washington county men Thomas DeWees Merle Walker Clarence Chance and Everett Chance were released after Dean Hornecker admitted his earlier account was false Their innocence was publicly emphasized by Sheriff George Oakes and former Sheriff Charles M Denison with officials noting the absence of any wrongdoing by the men The incident began when Hornecker falsely implicated them after being seen near the depot during the robbery at Columbus Junction express office
George Buckley vice president of the National City Bank of New York and of City Farmers Trust died at his home in New York City. He had served as special assistant to General Hugh S. Johnson directing the NRA newspaper and publishing division and later as deputy administrator of the Federal Housing Act. Buckley left banking on a government assignment and is survived by three brothers and two sisters. He was born in Washington Iowa and attended the University of Chicago. His career included leadership roles at Crowell Publishing and the Chicago Herald Examiner before joining the National City Bank in 1925 and rising to vice president.
A cold front from the north brings sub zero temperatures to Iowa with northeastern areas facing five below. The cold spell began last night and is expected to intensify before easing Friday. Washington saw a 13 degree above zero night with little wind.

Carpenters work in the basement of the court house converting a storeroom behind the sheriff's office into two rooms for the county old age assistance board and pension examiners. The change, approved by the county board of supervisors, relocates the pension office from the sheriff’s outer room to improved quarters.
The obituary notes Buckley served as bank president since 1926 and was vice president of City Bank Farmers Trust Co, affiliated with National City. He belonged to clubs including Deepdale Burning Tree Links National Press Rookery Chicago Club Duchess Golf and Country Club and National Golf Links. Funeral set for Friday at St Vincents Parish church 66th St and Lexington Ave with interment in Washington Iowa.
Charles Hebner 85, veteran businessman and former Washington fire chief, died at his home. Funeral service Saturday at 10 with burial in Elm Grove Cemetery. Survived by widow and two children. Hebner led local bands, served in the National Guard, and was an honorary G A R member.
Rev and Mrs D I Coon of Kearny Nebraska visit and plan to preach at the Baptist church Sunday. He served as pastor here for years before 1918 before leading a Greeley Colorado church and later working at Kearney. The couple enjoy renewing acquaintances and were hosted by Mr and Mrs John Dodd during their stay.
In Marlboro Lester Skinner trapped a skunk that was unusually marked by an 8 percent inch piston ring around its body. The animal appeared to have ringed itself before being captured.
Local churches plan Christmas programs and treats from Saturday afternoon through Christmas night with multiple congregations staging recitations plays and songs. Highlights include United Presbyterian, Four Square Gospel, Church of Christ, and St Paul Evangelical events led by various teachers and choirs.
Caleb Milne age 23, victim of a kidnapping near Philadelphia, is alive but facing pneumonia. Federal agents and local police pursue suspects after Milne was found taped, bound and semi conscious in a roadside ditch. Ransom claims vary with reports of a $25,000 paid or not paid.

Fred Downing, secretary of the local civil service commission, has received notices of forthcoming exams for postmaster at Brighton and Wayland. Applications close January 3, with exam dates about two weeks after the close. Washington is among designated examination sites, and competitors may test at any designated location.
Milo Reno of Des Moines, president of the Farmers National Holiday association, told Kiwanians and Rotarians that the AAA program has wiped out five billion dollars of farm income and urged passage of the McNury-Haugen bill.
Contributions in the last two or three days have increased the Goodfellows fund to 75 dollars nearly doubling the previous total. A list of the new contributions will be given tomorrow. It is hoped more will be reported by then. Seventy five dollars will not be enough to fill Christmas baskets this year. Twice the amount was used last year.
Thousands of mourners filed past Thelma Todd’s blue satin clad coffin in a lengthy viewings at a Los Angeles funeral chapel. Police guarded the scene as Jewel Carmen testified she saw Todd driving her car Sunday night two hours before her body was found in West’s garage.
About twenty residents of Clay township asked the county board of supervisors to reroute the county trunk road. They propose a northward path from Brighton toward Rubio instead of the current westward then north route, hoping for better highway access. The board will inspect the area and decide later.
