Joe Streppel, 66, crafts handbuilt miniature toy houses and barns in his Riverside shop using scrap wood and shingles. He glues asphalt roof bits, paints with care, and adds tiny doors windows and haylofts. He lives with sisters Rosalia and Mary who share his hobby and summer work.
Funeral services for Mrs Melinda Sands were held at Sherman’s funeral home on Monday afternoon at 2 pm. Rev Reed and Rev Carl Steele officiated with Mrs Larry Trotter as soloist. The remains were cremated and will be sent to California for burial.
Increasing cloudiness tonight as snow spreads across Iowa, starting in the west. Colder conditions in the east and central tonight with temperatures dipping 5 to 10 below zero. A new cold wave swept into Iowa after the second snowstorm in four days. Forecasters expect more light snow tomorrow as a low pressure system in western Canada drives winds 20 to 25 mph and keeps temperatures well below normal.
An elderly man and his wife were found frozen to death in their unheated Delmar shack last night. Coroner Liegecert reported the stove fire had gone out and the couple likely fainted or could not reignite it. Neighbors found the bodies after they did not see the couple over the weekend. The couple was described as poor with no food in the home.
A tearful Minneapolis mother pleads for help locating her son Franklin Manor who disappeared December 5. The 16 year old sea scout had stopped to aid an elderly man who collapsed. a crowd wrongly accused him of causing the accident, prompting his escape.
Samuel R. Warren 80 of a farm near Washington died this morning after a year of failing health. Funeral services will be Thursday at the Gretel dome with Rev. VT Polk in charge. burial in Elm Grove cemetery. He was born August 1871 to Henry L. and Caroline Hull Warren, married March 10, 1896 to Myrtie S. Wilbur, and was a member of the Jesuit Hill Christian church. Survivors include his wife ten children and a sister. One daughter died in infancy.
The annual Christmas program will be presented by the children of the United Presbyterian Church Wednesday evening. The program will follow a family a dinner served at 6 30 cooperation dinner and all members and friends are urged to attend. The church office reports Santa Claus will arrive with treats for the children around the time the program closes.
Sioux City welfare officials promised a Santa like Christmas for five young siblings found cold and hungry in an ice encrusted two room house. Parents Francis Bennett and wife faced charges of child neglect as police described the case as shocking. Three children wore only light clothing. others carried bread and beans from a neighbor. The youngsters were taken to the Girls Home for care and meals. Bennett and Mrs Bennett were arrested after a hotel arrest of a third party. Johnson, 52, was detained on a separate desertion claim. Each parent bond set at 1000 with December 26 hearing scheduled.
Funeral services for Mrs. Mary Hirt 74 will be held Wednesday at St. Marys Catholic Church Riverside. Burial will be in a cemetery west of Hills. The rosary is set for Tuesday night at McGovern funeral home Iowa City. She was born May 14 1877 and lived on a Hills area farm before moving to Riverside. Survived by sister Mrs Rosa Brecht Davenport and several nieces and nephews.
Paris dispatch reports Russia will join the UN disarmament commission even if it bases work on the Baruch atomic control plan. Soviet Foreign Minister Andrei Vishinsky told the UN political committee Moscow would take its seat on the bodies created last week but would oppose using the Baruch plan as the starting point in world disarmament talks.

Iowa Aeronautical Commission head Merc Locke could not attend. rescheduled appearance planned with an invitation extended.
James McKee 8 3 of Conesville died suddenly at his home at 10 30 a m. He formerly operated a meat market at Columbus Junction and was a grain and feed dealer at Conesville. Funeral services will be held at 2 p m Thursday in the Evangelical and Reformed Church at Conesville. The body is at Stacy funeral home. He was born December 6 1868 near Columbus Junction, married April 14 1891 to Margaret Bebbs who survives. Survivors include his wife one daughter Eva McKee of St Cloud Minnesota three grandchildren and three great grandchildren. One son died a few years ago.
The Panak Walton league Chicaqua chapter postpones its December meeting to January 7 in St James social hall at 8 p.m. Officers will be elected and Dr A Peterson will present films from a Canadian hunting trip along with other films. refreshments follow.
Dr. Virgil Hancher president of the State University of Iowa spoke at the Washington County Swine Producers Association annual dinner in the Methodist church stressing better education in a connected world. Sam Bousser West Chester Keith Barnes Towyn Davis were elected county directors. Bowser named Master Swine Producer for the year. A crowd of 200 heard the address with Methodist Men present.
Ralph Martin proprietor of Martins Cleaners was named president of the Washington Chamber of Commerce by the board of directors at its first meeting after the recent election. He had completed a term on the board this fall and has long been an active member. Dave Livingston will serve as vice president and Kenton Mangold remains secretary.
A sweeping winter storm system melts into the nation’s midwest and northeast with freezing rain and heavy snowfall. At least 181 died from weather direct effects and exposure, plus dozens more in traffic accidents and fires across multiple states. Forecasters warn of more cold snaps and renewed snow through Christmas season.
Prime Minister Winston Churchill promised full British support for the European army plan and all measures toward political and military radication of Western Europe. Officials called the talks with French Premier Rene Pleven excellent and said relations between Britain and France were cemented in peacetime. Foreign Secretary Anthony Eden also met with Egyptian and Palestinian leaders to discuss Britain's dispute with Egypt.
Top UN military and armistice officers meet at UN Headquarters Korea to discuss future conduct of the Korean war. Gen Matthew Ridgway presided and said accord was reached on major issues though details were undisclosed. The talks focused on whether to extend the truce or resume fighting with a persuasive offensive as ground actions remained limited to patrols.
Negotiators rushed to reach a two week agreement to avert a strike by 650000 CSO steelworkers set for January 1. The union demands higher hourly wages and overtime. Philip Murray said a government plan won’t be accepted and a special convention is set for January 5 to decide the strike.

Grunewald the Dutchman has been subpoenaed by three house investigators to testify Thursday about a purported 500000 fan shakedown against ex Ca pone attorney Abraham Teitelbaum. Grunewald hospital bound and will appear only if able, per attorney William V. Maloney.
The Communist bloc gave the United Nations a list naming 198 U S war prisoners and 11 350 Allied prisoners from about 26 North Korean camps. U N officials said 3 195 American prisoners would be released as copies of the list arrive. The exchange moves toward an armistice but officials warned it is only a step forward.

Preceded by parents and two siblings.
