Catherine Sforza Died Four Centuries Ago in Florence
Four centuries ago Catherine Sforza died in Florence after a life of dynastic marriage and political defiance. Born in 1461 in Milan and legitimized by the Milanese ducal family, she wed Girolamo Riario and bore five sons and a daughter before Riario’s murder. In Imola and Rome she built influence, then faced siege and hostage peril when Medici rivals rose. She led defenders from the citadel and survived a brutal standoff before dying at Santa Maria della Mirata convent in Florence.
