William J. Bryan in The Commoner denounces President Roosevelt's message on the Pulitzer Panama case as an attack on free speech and press. He argues officials are not immune from criticism and warns against using the government to punish critics.
Miss KE J Sisson an instructor at Forest Glen seminary Kensington Md claims in a Baltimore Sun interview that President Roosevelt during a Thanksgiving horseback ride rode past seminary girls and struck a rider with his crop rebuking her for leading. White House officials denied the episode calling it unlikely and doubting the tale’s authenticity stating the president was not horseback riding that day.
The House unanimously adopts a resolution asking the president to provide any evidence supporting his statement in the last annual message about Congress members and government secret service appropriations. The committee will stay in session through Christmas to receive the evidence and proceed. In Connecticut, Thompsonville reports Theodore Roosevelt Jr. may seek a seat in the next state assembly.
Mlle Adeline Genee the Danish dancer was received by President Roosevelt by special appointment in Washington on December 18. She is likely to appear privately at the White House.
Frank Bryant, condemned to hang today in the county jail, declares he killed Thomas Brady because he believed Brady killed his father. He says he searched for evidence for years and obtained what he calls positive proof to justify the death penalty.
Three men face the gallows in New Westminster British Columbia on December 18. James Jankins a Negro will hang for the murder of a white man. John Portella a colored man will die for killing a Negro woman. Lee Chung a Chinese man was sentenced for killing a fellow countryman.
In Flushing New York on December 18 the state plans more testimony to prove Thornton Hains knew Captain Peter C Hains intended to kill William E Annis and aided his brother in locating the victim. Frederick Storm testified Hains discussed buying a lot at Bayside Yacht Club before Annis was identified. Charles Birchfield said Hains threatened him with a revolver to stop him from intervening as the shooting occurred and later drove Mrs Annis from the float. Mrs William E Annis testified to her husband s death and will testify again.
The freight steamer Marion outward bound collided with a ferryboat in the East river. Three persons were injured and both vessels were badly damaged. The steamer’s bow was stove in and it was necessary to beach her. The ferryboat carried 300 passengers.
President elect Taft arrived in Augusta amid a major reception as business paused. Taft, his sons, Horace Taft and Wendell Mischier, traveled by auto escorted by Richmond Hussars while Senator Tillman chatted en route to the South. The White House visit preceded a Panama voyage planned with two navy cruisers for safety before inauguration.
The Rev. Philip C. Fletcher of the First Methodist Episcopal church in St. Louis told his young female parishioners that using artificial beautifiers is acceptable. He urged striving to be winsome and permitted powder puff, paint brush, and brow pencil to help them look their best mentally, physically, and morally.

Somerville Massachusetts December 18 District Attorney Higgins orders an investigation into the deaths of six relatives of Mrs Mary Kelleher over three years. The alleged arson charge is being weighed against her while reports claim life insurance paid to Mrs Kelleher. The deceased include her husband son two daughters and two sisters in law.
Senator Bourne introduced a bill to raise the president’s salary from 50000 to 100000 and the vice president’s from 12000 to 25000, effective at the start of the next administration in Washington.

Charles E. Allison a South Bend printer died from hemorrhage caused by choking on a peanut bursting a blood vessel.
In Monticello Kentucky on December 18 Mamie Womack a white schoolgirl was found dead after an assault. Two days later Elmer Hill a white man was arrested amid fears of mob violence. Deputies withdrawn led to thirty disguised men seizing Hill and hanging him four miles from town.
Arthur Jenkins a United States Navy sailor accused of sending a scurrilous postcard to President Roosevelt has been ordered returned to the receiving ship Hancock in Norfolk Virginia for observation of mental condition.
Chicago report states Mrs. Louise McDowell is under arrest charged with stealing diamonds valued at $10,000 from a Pittsburg society woman's reception. Police say she aided the theft by entering the home and taking a jewel box containing the gems.
New York December 18 Representatives of major copper producers refiners and manufacturers from the United States and Europe met to organize an international association. The group controls about 65 percent of world copper output and while price regulation is denied some output agreement is suspected.

She sued the Ulster County Agricultural Society seeking twenty five thousand dollars after becoming entangled in a dangling rope and lifted skyward during an aeronautical exhibition.

John Farley, a night orderly, was nearly killed in the lounging room of the marine barracks at the Brooklyn navy yard. He was attacked with a razor by a rival recruit over a girl. Farley refused to name his assailant when taken to the hospital.
