A letter from Hills California dated December 17 suggests giving personal notes to employees instead of gifts. The writer urges reassuring workers they will not be fired and keeping positions secure to relieve anxiety and spur holiday shopping, despite tough conditions.
Death occurred at 2 a.m. at 1214 North Iowa avenue. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at L. A. Jones funeral home with Dr. F. W. Eastwood officiating, burial in Tennessee cemetery near Columbus City. Born Malissa Josephine Orr in 1854, she married twice and left four living children, one daughter died in infancy, and had three grandchildren.
Governor elect Dan W. Turner told the county attorneys that state executive agencies would aid law enforcement in Iowa. He praised Iowa courts for backing law enforcement and urged building public opinion against lax enforcement. He defined public officers as those who act on convictions regardless of opinion. Capt. Fred G. Armstrong spoke on the Michigan state police and Prohibition Administrator M. L. Harney discussed enforcement.

Winter production was 604 337 000 bushels valued at 388 627 000 dollars. Durum wheat yielded 25 113 000 dollars from 55 665 900 bushels.
In South Alburgh Vermont William Cameron reports a harvest of 261 bean pods totaling 1375 beans. The unusual yield highlights a prolific crop and marks a notable farming record for the season.
Twelve giant Savoia seaplanes led by Gen ital Balbo depart Orbetello Italy for a voyage to Rio de Janeiro with aim to Buenos Aires if requested. The group splits into four colored squadrons and travels via Cartagena and Bolama, carrying spare parts for the long Atlantic crossing.

The Senate Foreign Relations Committee voted 10 to 9 to postpone reporting the World Court protocols to the Senate until December 1931. Democratic members supported delay. Chairman Borah aligned with Democrats. Senator Walsh was absent, possibly tied the vote. The move preserves President Hoover’s position despite Republican protests.
Washington high school defeated Muscatine high school by unanimous judge’s ruling on the question that chain store systems harm American interests. Team members included Harold Kautz and Margret Enellund for Muscatine and William Masson and Lucille Davison for Washington. Debates continue this evening at Muscatine with Washington’s affirmative facing Muscatine’s negative.
The Rotary club Monday meeting centered on business ethics and handling various circumstances. Miss Elsie Bratten led music with piano solos, and the group enjoyed club singing. Next week features a Christmas exchange and the following night marks Rotary Ann.

The Fortnightly club of Washington votes 100 toward the Y W C A budget at their meeting. Miss Anna Dawson notes the amount remains short but members pledge continued support. Additional gifts include 25 to the educational fund and 30 to three Iowa children’s homes and 10 to the League of Women Voters.
A 60 year old will was filed for probate in Cambridge Massachusetts disposing of the 35000 dollar estate of Freeman Nickerson who died in October. The document remained unchanged for fifty years since its drafting.
Real basketball action looms as Muscatine and Washington meet on the court tomorrow night in a high school showdown likely to attract local fans and showcase team strengths.
United States District Judge William Clark in Newark holds the eighteenth amendment invalid on the basis it was improperly ratified.
