Secretary Root appeared before the Senate committee on military affairs in Washington to defend General Leonard Wood's confirmation as major general. He read official correspondence and testimony about Wood's Cuban governorship and administration, speaking for two and a half hours starting at 10 o'clock.
An expressman delivered the Hay-Bunau-Varilla canal treaty to the state department in a large steel box, with two tin-bound boxes containing the keys. The packages, tied with red and blue ribbons, carry a tag to Minister Bunau Varilla and await the Panama minister’s arrival in Washington.

Rear Admiral Rodgers commandant of the New York navy yard his wife Mrs Rodgers their son Frederick and four servants narrowly escaped coal gas suffocation at the commandant house. Mrs Rodgers and Frederick and one servant were treated by a physician and recovered. The admiral was not seriously affected as gas from the basement furnace filled most rooms. He woke choking and carried his wife and son to fresh air. prompt care restored them.
The schooner William C. Tanner brought in T Jenkins Haines his wife and the Edna crew after a hurricane shattered the pleasure yacht Edna off Ocracoke North Carolina. Haines, author of Wind Jammers and Strife of the Sea, sailed Dec 7 for the West Indies and Florida. The Edna was struck Dec 9 blew off course Dec 9. rigging torn Dec 11. cabin flooded. rudder lost before rescue.
In Rendsburg a court martial sentenced Franz ki to imprisonment and dishonorable discharge for brutality, described as the brutality of an ex driver. In Woodsville New Hampshire Albert H Eastman president of the Berlin National Bank and vice president of Gorham National Bank was arrested by U S Marshal Nate on a false entry charge involving a $5000 note and is held on $10000 bonds.
Returns show a solid Democratic aldermanic board of thirteen seats and sixty of seventy five common council seats. Eight Democratic candidates win school committee. Mayor Patrick A. Collins leads with 48,851 votes to Republican George N. Swallow’s 22,286.
In Tombstone Arizona on December 17 thirteen inmates escaped after sawing jail bars and breaching walls. Among the fugitives are Bert Alverd and W A Stiles, identified as principals in the Cochise train robbery from a year earlier in the county.
The Crane Pipe Company will give 250000 dollars in Christmas bonuses to about 5000 tellers in Chicago. Nearly 4,000 workers in the Haledon district of Paterson New Jersey will remain idle for days after a small dam burst releasing waters from Hoppers pond. The flood flooded about thirty acres housing several large factories coating machinery with ice and freezing the basements and surrounding streets.

Three men robbed the Lee Wolf & Bros store in downtown Dayton stealing checks drafts and paper money totaling about 3300 dollars. One man distracted proprietor Lee Wolf while two others grabbed money from a table in the office and later discarded the bank book and drafts in a nearby box. The robbers kept about 300 dollars in paper money.
